I heard it was only 28kb then dial-up changed to 56kb. I heard that broadband started at 256mb and anything over 256mb was broadband now you get it at speeds up to 100mb. I used the dial-up at 56kb until 2009 and it was very slot and when I joined Facebook it got very annoying. Can't remember using the original 1998 28kb internet though. Bet that was terrible and you would have never been able to play live with dial-up.

  MANC  :D

I was one of the very first subscribers to Telewest, which went on to merge with NTL, then Virgin Media, by then though it was onto the faster 56kbs modems, so it had moved on somewhat to what Manc and Ste are saying. I've used slower modems though such as the 14.4kbs my brother's mate had and other speeds probably 28.8 and/or 33.6 kbIt. It wasn't uncommon to run up a phone bill of £70 or more, because we had to dial up a server back then on the phone line.

Back then, nobody here had heard of Google as it was probably still being founded and developed, so Yahoo and Alta Vista were my search engines of choice. Internet Explorer was a bit shit back then too, so Netscape Navigator was my web browser of choice.

I couldn't go back to those days now technology has moved on, as they were mind numbingly slow, but because the technology was cutting edge it was exciting times knowing you were one of the tens of thousands in this country that were using it.

I mind I got NTL cable and it was like 512k and I was the daddy on Audiognome in the oldskool room (how I met many people) . 1 person would send to me and then everyone would leech it from me because my connection was so superior to everyones 56k modems haha. :gigolo:

I can't remember when I switched to Broadband, but it was no doubt the time they introduced it in my area:think:

ISDN was the first faster version (well a cheat) which increased the dial up speeds, as it linked up 2 lines on BT's service. 56kbs was always considered the maximum speed on one phoneline, so this effectively doubled your speed at probably double the cost.

I'd probably give up the internet for all but the most important stuff if we had to go back to those speeds:snooty:

I can remember £200 per month phone bills... And downloading the Quake 3 tech demo at 30mb it was the largest download i'd attempted and took pretty much 3- days solid :fekked:

I was apparently the first customer of blueyonder to have broadband in Wigan. I can remember they had to put cables in all the way up the street on the day of installation. It was only 512kb, but what a difference it made.

Back in those days I was a quake 2 addict and I can remember not being able to play properly with less latency once the broadband was installed.

Exciting times.

yeah 14.4 modems!! haha! my first connect was with Demon, ooh around 93ish?? cost me £20 a month + BT's local call rate, was it 1p a minute?, with a 2hr cut off!! thank fook for Net Vampire!!, and them early days of Napster when they were all yanks!, i just took the piss!
like ya say Jiglo, Alta Vista & Netscape was the bollox!
