This is a Club Vison vid, but its not on their youtube channel, its on JFK's YT, filmed @ Passion @ The Emporium Coalville, which is my home town (I no longer live there) its a venue that I went to many times under diff names over the yrs, I used to go on a tuesday night with all my mates, it was called called nappy night aka under 18s, but if you were 18 you could get a beer which was upstairs on the balcony.

Its also the same venue me and my mate put a hardcore night on in 1991 and booked ratty and a live P.A, back then it was just a shaz n dave place, one big room, a bar on groundfloor with a stage and DJ booth in the corner, a bar upstairs with balcony, deffo a bit of a ritzys type place, plenty of fights & door men who were well up for a good tear up if yo wanted one, there was a alldayer put on in 1990 which is were I first seen formation 5 perform, they played a mixed bag of soul hip hop funk etc and SS was starting to get into the rave Scene, my mate also played that day with his mate who called themselves Twin Attack not sure who the other djs were....

The Emporium was where me and my Mrs first got togeather, tbh I thought it was 94 has the stamp on my passport for Turkey says 94 for some reason, but the club details says open in 95, oh well always feels longer with the moaning.

I love how Lisa Nash says pronounces Coalville just like a local :D

The Emporium in the early days was a really good night, the only thing was all the locals started going, ones who had never been on the rave or club scene before, Im not saying I am any better them, but for me it made it feel like we wasnt getting out of the town and meeting new people, if that makes sense ?...

Has you may know Coaville was a mining town, like any mining towns it could be a very drab & tough place grow up, we used to say you didnt grow up in Coalville you were dragged up, when I got into the rave scene in the late 80s it was almost like going on holiday every weekend, I used to dread coming bk home and seeing the same faces day in day out.

Regards the The Emporium being in my home it did have some advantages, such has I could walk there, no driving, and if none of my mates were going, I could still go knowing I would know someone in there, but has I say I liked to get out of town, so every weekend we would going up and down the country to diff clubs just like we did looking for raves in the early days, so I didnt spend to much time in there tbh.

When I moved out of my home town, I popped into The Emporium probs twice to meet up with an old mate, he used to go every wk, the club had changed for the better, they had made loads of changes by etending into more rooms etc, also there didnt seem to be so many of the locals in there, deffo a lot more people coming from far and wide, infact I was only speaking to him the other day and he said to me, can you believe this shit hole of a town had one of the best clubs in the country, I pointed out to him if you look at how good some venues were around the country alot of them are in or was in tough ereas.

Where did you travel Ming ?

Where did you travel Ming ?
Mid 90's (93-97) Was Bowlers Manchester 2-3 times a month with a few Hacienda, Wigan Pier, Sankeys Soap, Golden, Cream, Anthem City, New Dawn (Newcastle Under Lyme), Angels a couple of times that was a good night out for a club built into a multistory car park :) looking back we used to get around but there was nothing better than talking cod shit to some total stranger for hours, new faces every week happy days! I did manage to catch the last couple of months of shellys with the lads who were all older than me that was an experience, that place was mental.

Quite strange really that we live in the midlands but always travelled north for our nights out, we only went to Miss moneypennys twice and decadence once and there are both on our doorstep more or less. used to co Coalville all through the 2000's it was a really good night out, there was always loads of people from all over the country. always used to go into the pub next door to the Emporium for a few drinks before going into passion, that que used to be fooking massive.

Sounds like you were lucky enough to be around for the real early days of the rave scene i only got to hear about those days from the lads older than me, not that i am complaining i had an awesome time the years that i did go and would not change a thing. I know plenty of folk my age that only went to the local ritzy type places what a fooking waste (n)

Where was your Club of choice?

You got to some good events, Yes I was lucky to go to some of the early events.
I hung around with a bunch of lads who were in their early mid 20s I was 16 ish when I went to a rave, I never had a problem getting in to any event, the lads always looked after me.

The pub you mention is The Engine, that was a real drinkers pub bk in the day, they did rather well when The Emporium took off, the Chip shop/sit down cafe next door to The Emporium was were I used to work in the summer holidays.

Has to say what was my club of choice, is a tuff call, I think Im gonna have to say Progress for House, it was great when the venue was at The WhereHouse always a banging night , but when they moved to The Conservatory in 95, I wasnt that keen on the venue, so spent less time in there. Although I would add Hot To Trot to that list.

I did spend a lot of time in brum 94/95 ish in Tin Tins, Miss Moneypenny's, I did like the nights at The Institute, they had no dress code so my scruffy ass mate could get in :ROFLMAO: he would never dress smart, so loads there was loads of places he never got into.

For Harcore events I cant really pick one there so many good events, went to loads of Amnesia's spent a lot of time in The Eclipse & Shelleys.

When mid 92 came around I spent more time at house clubs, I didnt like how the vibe was at the hardcore events, djs all doing one genre, the music was getting harder etc

Heres a list of events that I can remember going to, there are quite a few events that I had forgot id gone to and there is probally more...
Stamina, Hacienda, Amnesia, Sunrise, Raindance, The Eclipse, Ibiza (all of the big clubs) Shelleys, Fantazia, Perception, DiY + any other free parties going, kaos, Rage, Kinetic, Time, Pandemonium, lots illegal Events

and the list goes on etc, with more my house period....

Hot To Trot, Progress, Splendid, Beef, Miss Moneypenny's, Tin Tins, Wobble, The Emporium, Golden, Cream, The Steering Wheel, Bakers, G spot,
The Institute (brum) wicked nights with the res dj tomislav:thumbsup:
Crazy Daisy's, Soak, Venus
etc etc

There are a few places I wish I had gone to, one being Rhumba Club in Scottland.

I would love to know how many miles we clocked over the yrs going to diff places.

I always wanted to go the Eclipse but never made it :( the tapes were banging. I did go to progress at the conservatory once had a good night as i remember. Also did go to a few hardcore nights at Kinetic@Longton Lesuire bowl and Quest in Wolverhampton but as you say the vibe did get a bit on the moody side at the hardcore nights so we switched to house nights, the ladies were always dressed to impress at the house events anyway ;)

The Engine! thats the bugger i couldnt remember the name of the pub. i cant imagine it as a proper boozers pub it was always full of clubbers with a DJ banging out the tunes when i went in there :) I know the chippy your on about i dont think i ever seen it open when i was there not that i remember anyway, but i am sure i have qued passed the doorway on many a night, its a small world :)

Bowlers was definitely my club of choice had so many top nights in there also no dress code so you could go scruffy as you liked, your mate would have liked it 🤣 at its peak there was 4500 clubbers every week from all over the country, with residencies from welly, vertigo, stu allen, rob tissera, bowa ect it never failed to deliver a night of top tunes and plenty of madness. aaah memories 😁

Sounds like we may have shared a dance floor once or twice at some point in the 90's you never know (y) I never went north of the border for a night out either but i hear good things about the rave scene up in Scotland the few tapes i have heard from rhumba are rather good so might of missed out there, you cant have everything i suppose. Gutted i missed out on those early days of the illegal parties that must have been fun!

Me and my lot did wonder on a few occasions just how many miles we had racked up going out every week and how much money we had spent on going out but that got rather scary when you thought about that to much :ROFLMAO:
I took these photos the day i moved out of my mothers house for posterity they tell a tale of my clubbing through the mid 90's
