Following a fantastic year where The Source has brought dance music legends such as Frank De Wulf, Ellis Dee, DJ Trace and many more to the Hare and Hounds, we start the new year with a bonafide legend of the Rave/Jungle/Drum and Bass scene - Ray Keith.
Ray Keith
As a DJ, producer, remixer, radio & TV presenter and head honcho of several record labels, Ray Keith is one of the foundations that the whole Jungle/Drum and Bass music scene has been built upon. After establishing himself as a DJ around the south east in the 80’s, Ray began producing at the start of the 90’s and after early releases on Advance Records (as Dune) and Absolute 2, he soon found himself in demand as a remixer and was asked to remix such classics as Orbital’s ‘Chime’, Baby D’s ‘Let Me Be Your Fantasy’ and Shades of Rhythm’s ‘Sweet Sensation’. As the hardcore sound evolved into Jungle, Ray’s production skills put him at the forefront of this new sound and led to him releasing (as The Renegade alongside fellow DJ/producer Nookie) the classic track ‘Terrorist’ on the legendary Moving Shadow label in 1994. In the same year, he started his Dread Recordings label which was responsible for unleashing some of the most memorable releases of the mid 90’s Jungle era such as ‘The Chopper’, ‘Sing Time’ and ‘Dark Soldier’ as well as remixing Jungle classics such as ‘Babylon’, ‘Scottie’ and DJ Rap’s ‘Spiritual Aura’. Following this Ray started another 2 labels – Penny Black and UFO both specialising in his trademark Amen-heavy production as well as releasing EP’s on the legendary V Recordings, Chronic and Emotif labels and having regular radio shows on Kiss FM and Vibe FM. To this day, Ray still runs all 3 labels as well as continuing to work at London’s premier dance music record shop, Blackmarket Records which has enabled him to keep his finger firmly on the pulse of the scene and has led him to discover and nurture many new artists such as Serum, Bladerunner and Birmingham’s own, Lionfire as well as leading him to start a 4th label, his Dub Dread imprint which focuses on an up-to-date take on the classic Jungle sound with heavy Dub and Reggae overtones.
One of the scenes true innovators, the Source is proud to welcome Ray Keith for a rare 2hr journey through the Rave/Jungle years that he helped define with his record labels and his unique productions.
Add to this sets by Source residents Glenn Aston, Gershwin and DJ-X and you got the recipe for one fantastic party to start 2012.
