Selectors on the one's and two's:

RIKOCHET aka POPEYE (JUNGLE MASSIVE AUSTRALIA)

No old skool Jungle night would truly be complete without this man. Cutting his teeth in Sydney's early 90's warehouse rave sc3ne he became one of the only Dj's at the time to push fully a Breakbeat Hardcore & Jungletekno vibe in the city under his early alias

DJ POPEYE - becoming established through the release of his Junglistic Rowdyness and N4CER series mix tapes.

As a DJ competition panel judge, he also played numerous radio shows and was a columnist on the topic of Breakbeat and Jungle in the Rave journal, Juicy Red Apple and D&B in the UK "Knowledge" magazine.
As a JMA founding member, Popeye was instrumental in championing the new cutting edge sound of Jungle / Drum & Bass to Sydney through his various mix tapes. After the release of the JMA tapes (Vol 1 D&B - This is Jungle) in 1996, Popeye changed names to Rikochet, and became the first Australian DJ to play Triple JJJ’s Mixup program 3 times.

In his 18 year career he has played along the likes of CARL COX, SLIPMATT, ROB PLAYFORD, GROOVERIDER, RATTY, DJ SS, KENNY KEN, Dr S. GATCHET, DJ RAP and MC FEARLESS to name a few.

Now residing in Melbourne he is flying up exclusively for this gig.
The last Stepback saw him pull out all the classics he is known for, this time expect more emphasis on those hard steppers from his early JMA days as well as those ones you know that will scream for a rewind.

DELTASHELTA aka Ben Walton

Traditionally a underground house and techno Dj over the last 14 years, Ben Walton always found time for collecting early 90‘s breakbeats. The amount of hours sourcing tunes from old mix tapes (prior to them all being online), getting them id’d and hunting them down is immeasurable and in the process he’s gained himself a formidable old skool collection that raises an eyebrow or two.

He has played at and been involved with numerous events around Sydney over the years including old skool gigs in Newcastle and Melbourne. In addition he has djayed in Europe with many memorable gigs, from snow peaked mountain tops in Austria to playing on a boat in the canals of Amsterdam. He has lived for brief periods in London, Austria, New Zealand, Berlin and California.

Also involved with radio, he ran the ‘Green Decks & Ham Show’ on 2SER, a monday morning recovery music program for hardcore weekend revelers which always had a dedicated slot for the old skool.

‘I guess because my roots were in the early raves I have always enjoyed playing warehouse and out door parties, it seems much more authentic and there is a rawness to it, people are there for the music rather than just to pose’.

The creator of Stepback, he felt the need to help fill the gap for all that cheap computer music that never sees the light of day, ‘Alot of this early hardcore and jungle music was all made in people’s bedrooms, it is like the punk of electronic music. I have all this killer wax that just sits in my room, it needs to be heard, if it means putting a party on, so be it.’

When playing old skool he now uses the alias, Deltashelta.

Expect a set which sounds like an amalgamation of Ratty, Bukem and Grooverider’s record box’s from ’93 with a bit of Hardcore Techno thrown in for good measure (think Dj Crisis, Prodigy 4)
See ya there.

GARRY BYNON aka RUFF TACTICS

Born in England, Garry has been into the Hardcore/Jungle sound since 1993. He then begun his Dj career in 1998 when moving to Australia, playing on a Newcastle community station with the likes of Mark N, another old skool enthusiast.
This spilt into involvement with various events around the Newcastle area in the coming years, playing and promoting party’s in a old skool and hardcore techno vein including his own ‘Breakdown’ events.

Naturally he then fell into the production side of things and already has eight vinyl releases and multiple cd’s under his belt. Through this he has toured around Europe to promote his take on the current breakbeat hardcore sound.

Today radio still plays a very important part in Garry's career, with a six month stint on legendary UK pirate radio station, ERUPTION FM. For the last few years his sets on the online old skool radio station, RENEGADE RADIO, have become renowned and still continue today.

Garry will be showcasing some of his production skills on the night, including the excellent remix of an underground classic, Dj Junk - Monsters and Demons, under his RUFF TACTICS guise. Expect to hear this and other releases weaved into his set at Stepback.

Anticipate nothing less than darkside pressure from Garry Bynon, as he will be digging deep into his crate of unknowns for the serious oldskool hardcore heads and purists.

HIGHLY DUBIOUS

Dubious took to dance music at the age of 14 - stealing his mate’s sisters mix tapes and listening to early dance radio in Sydney. After attending one of the now legendary Prodigy party's, things went steadily downhill from there and it wasn’t long before he was learning his way around Impulse Tracker and had invested in a pair of 1210’s.

Eagerly giving out mix tapes & CD’s to local Dj’s & promoters – he started picking up the occasional set, but it was a few more years before he became ingrained within the sc3ne. After becoming involved with The Collective and No Frills camps, and later going on to do parties under the Fun Bus name - Dubious has cemented his name with the Sydney bass music sc3ne.

In 2009 – he launched http://bassfreqs.com/ as a site for people with an interest in all kinds of dance music, which has gone on to become one of the strongest online communities for Sydney's flourishing underground music.

Dubious will be throwing down a selection of old skool classics and obscurities from his diverse collection for his Stepback set.
