He evolved from playing in San Francisco bands in the early 80s, sharing the stage with punk luminaries including the Dead Kennedys, to help forge the fusion of house, techno, rare groove and funky breaks that came to be known as “the West Coast sound”. In 2003, he founded genre-blending, leftfield disco label Rong Music, which has recently collaborated with DFA on a dual imprint label and also emanated offshoot labels, Tu Rong and Promo Only, which has made an indelible contribution to the current disco edit craze. </p><p></p><p>Currently residing in New York, Spun is the curator of P.S.1/MoMA’s monumental Warm Up Music Series, exposing an average of 4000 New York cats to the best in experimental music and live DJs, as well as racking up frequent flyer miles playing at respected parties from Berlin to Toyko to Sydney with the likes of Rub n Tug, the Idjut Boys and DJ Harvey.
