LINE-UP INFO

STU ALLAN ( MANCHESTERS BIGGEST LEGEND )

In 1982 Stu Allan took up DJing. Between 1984 and 1986 his mixes/remixes were featured on Piccadilly Radio, Manchester on various shows including Timmy Mallet, Chris Evans and Tim Grundy.
In July 1986 he was given his own show on Piccadilly Radio. He was originally filling in for the regular DJ on a 6 week vacation, but the reaction was so great from listeners that he was signed on permanently. He began featuring Hip Hop and a new style of music called House. "Love Can't Turn Around" by Farley Jackmaster Funk was the first record Stu played on the radio. This track got the attention of the people in charge of the station and Allan was asked to explain why he was playing this "music". He said he believed this was what listeners really wanted to hear (having seen clubbers going wild to tunes like "Jack Your Body", "Jack The Groove" and many other underground Chicago label tunes at his gigs), and convinced them that his choice of music was right when the station's ratings improved massively. During this period Stu produced a soul show called "Souled Out" and a hip hop show called "Bus 'Diss". He would also have a house hour which would feature the seamless mixing he is known for.
Stu Allan was also a regular DJ on the Vibealite rave scene, performing at many of their events across the North of England.

Clock

Between 1993 and 1999 he was one half of the production team behind eurodance act Clock. As well as having commercial success with these tracks, they were released as hardcore remixes under the pseudonym Visa and were hits on the underground too.

Radio

In 1999 - 2000 Kiss 100 approached him to mix & produce the now legendary "Kiss Mix" (Mon-Sat evenings) which became the most listened to shows on at that time in London for 14 - 24 year olds.
In 2005 he had a show named Hardcore Nation on Pure Dance

BARRIE JAY ( EUREKA, THE ZONE CO-FOUNDER AND ITALIAN HOUSE LEGEND )

With his roots firmly entrenched in the magic of Motown and Northern Soul, Barrie Jay has been peddling good music even before the heady nights of Wigan Casino left a lasting impression. His other major influence at that time was the atmosphere around Blackpool Mecca’s Highland Room and the groundbreaking music played by dj Colin Curtis as the change from Northern Soul to funk and jazz marched on. He appreciated his creative play-list that included such innovative artists such as Parliament and all the other members of the `Mothership`, especially Bootsy Collins with his Rubber Band, early Prince, The Ohio Players, Earth Wind and Fire and many obscure jazz funk artists from around the world.

As the seventies headed towards the eighties, and the spirit of Northern Soul, and the innovation of the jazz funk scene disappeared beneath a tide of banal disco music, Barrie became disillusioned with the dance music scene, and searched for other areas to satisfy his musical addiction. It wasn’t until the arrival of new and inspirational forms of music, in particular the electro-pop coming from bands like the Human League and Cabaret Voltaire, that his faith in music was restored. He was very impressed with the experimentations in sound and production by Brian Eno and David Byrne and it was at this time that Barrie came across what has since become his most driving musical influence: German synthesiser pioneers Tangerine Dream.

It was this love of electronic music that made possible Barrie’s transference to current Dance music. As the eighties ended and the acid explosion began in England and Europe, he was lead again into the dance music scene by the warehouse party nights around Blackburn and the north west of England. As the parties turned into battlefields, and the freedom to party was lost, Barrie ventured to his decks and has been dj`ing throughout the nineties mainly in the U.K. but as far a-field as Ibiza and Australia, as well as the occasional trip to the studio. His early play-list was mainly European techno, and he was one of the first dj`s in the country to play such material, bought from his many journeys to Eastern Bloc records in Manchester.

His first venture into club-land alongside dj Martin Lever was Eureka in Blackpool, and is heralded as a great success. The quality guest dj`s and artists it featured every week such as John DaSilva, Todd Terry, Justin Robertson, Roger Sanchez (his first ever UK gig) helped the club gain a lasting reputation for quality and innovation. A rift, now healed, lead to Barrie leaving.

His local record store, Melody House Records of Blackpool, also supplied some of the more obscure material he played. It was this connection that lead to him co-founding Zone, where he tried to recreate the warehouse atmosphere and encompass the magic friendliness of Wigan Casino for a new generation. Interestingly, the Blackpool venue was where legendary - and Sasha`s and many other peoples favourite ever - club night Shaboo, was held.

The early play-list was varied, ranging from US garage to European techno. Although the club is most remembered for playing uplifting Italian and piano house there was, particularly in the early days, a wide range of music played and appreciated. Many of the regulars who frequented the club in his short two year reign as top resident still reckon it to be the best club ever. Even Barrie agrees that some of the best ever nights of his club life were at Zone. Initially the nights featured guest dj`s and bands such as The Prodigy, Dream Frequency, Sub Sub, Bizarre Inc, Love Decade, Alex Gold, Rob Tissera but it developed a unique music blend and few other dj`s would be appreciated by the crowd. It has mainly relied on resident dj`s ever since. The queues to gain entrance to the club were often ridiculous and people at the front had often waited for six hours or more. The club night changed venues many times but he still appears as a regular guest at the reunions after 19 years.

Although he is best known for playing Italian house Barrie appreciates and plays many styles of dance music from the most funkiest and souful garage to the classiest breakbeat. He always looks for quality and creativity.

He is a regular at many events on the scene and is now a resident at Merseyside`s coolest old skool event Retro-Trax alongside Vertigo.

JOHN J JEPSON (REVENGE, BLACKBURN WAREHOUSE PARTIES, MONROES AND ZONE LEGEND)

I started djing around 1985 when electro first was heard on the shores of the UK having had a go at breakdancin and graffiti which I was not very good at I decided to look into the music I was dancing too , standing across the local shopping center were we used to break was a lad with a gettoblaster dressed in a brightly colored tracksuit and green glasses (hence the nickname green bins) , I asked him what some of the tracks he was playing was and who had put the tape together he told me the tracks then added he had done the tape .

After a few weeks he invited me round to his house where in the corner of the room was two turntables and a mixer , over the next few hours i was there he showed me how he had mixed the tape and with our great love of music are friendship was formed I was hooked and had to get my own set up !

lucky for me I was able to utilize my other talent of being a musician who had started playing keyboards from the age of 7 and with nights i was playing in hotels managed to get the technics and mixer I had dreamed of , over the next few months me and green bins traveled to buy records from Manchester where we discovered the famous Hacienda We discovered that this club was playing the best tracks of hip hop and a new sound that was starting to breakthrough that had a feel of electro but was known as house / acid, so one chilly Wednesday night we hit the train to Manchester to change our life for ever.

After a few months of going to Manchester to the club and to get them famous records, I had started to get the mixing thing together and decided to start putting tapes out. The sound was growing with great speed and soon it was not just for the city , people who had travelled to the hacienda wanted it and wanted it on there own doorstep. It was a trip to Blackburn that put me on the map I heard that party's were taking place all night in small lock ups and when I first attended made my way to the front to find the decks with my bag of tunes after some negotiations I got on the decks and did my set it went down a storm and I was asked to play again. The following weekend I returned to Blackburn to play and noticed more people than the week before attended the party and soon over the course of weeks then months the people and venues grew into full scale warehouse party's with convoys of cars reaching miles long and attended by thousands the atmosphere at these events was truly amazing and memories I will never forget.

My sets at these legendary warehouse party's help spread my name all over the north west and when police pressure sadly ended the weekly party's I was approached to launch my own night at MONROES in Blackburn . The first few weeks was quiet due to a police road block around the club as it was a meeting point in the past for the warehouse party's but after three weeks of the owners meetings with the police the block was lifted and soon the club was filled to the maximum ,over the next two years my residency established JOHN J on the underground house circuit playing a blend of uplifting house from around the globe . Monroe's was a truly amazing night and along with myself, GREEN BINS & DREAD MC and later on added WELLY became the team to have on at an event.

REVENGE warehouse party's and UPFRONT events followed before we split to go our own ways due to demand. Next I returned to my hometown where id been asked to become resident dj at a new night being launched called ZONE it was to be held in the former home of the famous 89-90 SHABOO club.

The night was a instant success and its brand name is one still running today it has helped and launched the careers of many well known DJs . ROB TISSERA , MATT BELL , CHRIS BAKER are to name a few . After four years I gave up my weekly residency to monthly to go play spots at other clubs. In the following years I was able to play at many major North West clubs & events on a regular basis.

THE EMPIRE , ANGELS & LIFE are just three excellent places that I have been able to play along side djs like JUDGE JULES, SASHA,PAUL TAYLOR & ROB TISSERA & many more.. The crowds was always exceptional at these events.

Wigan pier is also a great venue where I hosted the Splash night in 1996-7, with DJ Craig Stocks. The night was named after a dedicated dance radio station SPLASH FM that I had my own show on broadcasting live across the Fylde coast. After two years of traveling the road I returned to Blackpool to launch a new night at INSOMNIA. The night took a bit to get going but over two months the word had spread this night was a banging place to be. I had moved my sound to a more progressive house and trance style the crowd and the night went on to be recognised for being the first around for playing the big room sound that is popular today. Since then I have continued to work at many venues around the UK playing a blend of various sounds of dance music. My career as a DJ inevitably has lead to me making the transition to the recording studio where again my skills of playing the keyboards has come to use working with various other artists to produce original tracks as well as remixes. The future The use of new technology is taking my sets to new levels as I am always pushing forward the ability to have your own set up and be able to remix stuff quickly is amazing along with the use of various programs and a laptop combined with cd decks and turntables the sky's the limit.
Thanks John J

ROB THURSTON (MAXIMES LEGEND))

I started as a DJ by accident really - At the age of 15, I started buying records and fell in love with everything the early rave scene had to offer. It all began by playing a set every Friday night @ my local youth club alongside one of my best mates AJ. On the odd Saturday we would go down to a club in Wigan with the local boys; who set up the lighting system and lazer (Si/Malc) ready for the evening when the doors opened. They were long days, and being in an empty club during the day with Decks and Monitor speaker proved to be too much to resist. So I started taking my records when I could, and slowly but surely learnt how to mix. As soon as the doors opened at 9pm I would jump in the lighting box next to the DJ box, and during the course of the night whilst controlling the lights I would watch all the DJs with massive interest; learning all different techniques and of course train spotting all the massive anthems being smashed out to the dancing masses!! One evening, a year or so later, I was given the chance to do the warm up and since then I have never looked back. The Club was Maximes in Wigan and it was a time, when The Famous Back To The Old Skool Nights were in full prime, and thanks to Gary Hibbert & Peter Midgley (Hypnotic & Maximes). Old skool became my trademark. Many, many years later, I’m still loving it as much as I did back then. I still to this day play the odd old skool set @ Maximes which is now known as WN1.

Robhas been DJing for the best part of 19yrs now playing the club scene up and down the country, also abroad. My longest residency is Maximes in wigan ( Now WN1 ) for 15 years. During which time i also played the the legendary Hacienda. Have done radio performances for Key 103 & Galaxy 102.have had the pleasure of playing alongside the likes of Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Boy George, Seb Fontaine, Tony De Vit ( RIP ) Adrian Luvdup,Dave Haslam,Nipper,Stu Allan,Welly,Rick Jones,Moggy,Jay Weardon, Altern 8, K Klass, Shades of Rhythm,Rhythm Quest, Dream Frequency, Slipmatt, DJ SY, Mark XTC, Sappo, Sarge,Jay Prescott, Anne Savage, Paul Taylor, Eddie Halliwell, Rob Tissera, Dan Booth ( india's finest!!!!) and many more. You can catch me playing at Events such as Back To The Old Skool // Back By Dope Demand // Bowlers Reunion and many more old skool nights across the north west and country..

MATT BELL (Zone Legend/Empire/Angels Legend/Northern Project)

DJ Matt Bell, this Zone Legend started an interest in DJing whilst watching Djs at Blackburn raves back in 1988. Started putting on illegal parties in Preston and then moved onto clubs in 1990 which was Adam n eves in Blackpool. After this shut down, I played regularly at Love Shack on Fridays and then got the break at ZOne. I was a resident there and the Empire at Morecambe until around 1995 when I left and started a residency at Feel in Preston and Angels in Burnley where I played with a whole host of superstar DJs such as Sasha, Carl Cox, Tongy to name but a few. I've also done Bowlers, Fun at Birmingham and Ibiza plus loads of other events, some memorable, some not so..
Although I love new music, Old skool is where its at for me. Matt was gonna hang his headphones up in September 2010 due to work commitiments, but we are glad to say Matt is now able to become a resident Dj for the Northern Project

LEE GARRY (Wigan Pier Legend/Northern Project)

DJ Lee Garry, This Wigan Pier Legend is a part of the Northern Project and has Dj’ing flowing through his blood, starting out in 91 at the Legendary Wigan Pier Dreaming a Dream nights. DJ Lee Garry, recently rocked the house at the D.A.D Reunion and at the Northern Project showing us old skool never dies. Lee is a resident DJ for the Northern Project.

REG (Monroes/Maximes Legend/Northern Project)

I have been DJ-ing now for about 22 years. I was always into hip hop as a teenager but going to my local club the Pleasuredrome in Farnworth UK and watching the likes of DJ legend Sasha made me want to get involved in the House music scene. I started DJ-ing professionally at a club called Monroes in Great Harwood, near Blackburn, which although only small had a great reputation across the North-West in the early 90s for its house music and atmosphere. I left Monroes after 4 fantastic years and I moved onto Maximes in Wigan, working with an agency called Hypnotic promotions. Being with Hypnotic allowed me to play at such venues as The Hacienda (Manchester), Mr Smiths (Warrington), Park Hall (Wigan) and The Dry Bar (Manchester). After a couple of years I moved onto Federation in Blackpool, playing house music along side DJs Scott Bond, Alex P, Danielle Davoli and Smokin Jo to name just a few. I have since played at a multitude of clubs around the North of England and Europe alongside DJs Dave Morales, Sonique, Graeme Park, Joey Negro, DJ Disciple, Jim Shaft Ryan, Oliver Lang, Lottie, Mark Luvdup and Tim Lennox. I then co-promoted our own club nights under the name Souled Out. Our regular monthly events took place at various venues in the north west including sankeys soap also a new venue in london called the copyright club nr London bridge. Also a project called BACK TO FUNK which is organising parties playing upfront funky house etc.. I also got involved with an events organisation in Amsterdam where I have been flying there on a regular basis playing at there events with djs including Jorgensen, Marcella, Lucien Foort, Martijn Ten Velden to name a few And also we have been able to produce a few dance tracks of our own which up to now have not been signed but we are still hopeful.. These trax can be heard on myspace page:- www.myspace.com/djdamianlee I love the soulful / funky house vibe oh and of course old skool. I play music that is uplifting and often very vocal with a feel good sound primarily because it is the music that I enjoy and also because I feel it brings out the best kind of emotion from the crowd. I have more recently also started playing a slower funky house disco vibe similar to that of artists such as the unabombers, moodymann, trus-me and greg wilson to name a few. I am currently co promoter of THE NORTHERN PROJECT with ASH and LEE GARRY and have a great following of friends and old skool fans alike and im sure this new project can only blow up over time

ASH (Northern Project Legend)

This guy is a big part of the Northern Project and was bang at it with all you true Old Skool ravers back in the day on the Northern scene.

l started getting into djing after a few years of raving all over the North and collecting tunes on vinyl in the early 90s. Then in about 1993 l decided l wanted mix music how l wanted to hear it played in a club, PUMPING AND UPLIFTING!!!. DJ's like Matt Bell, Barrie Jay, John J, Andy D, Chris Baker (who were top dj's on the Blackpool and Northern scene back then they mostly played Happy Uplfting Vocal Italian Paino tunes mostly. To me you could'nt beat them tunes back then, so that was my path chosen with along with the best tunes from all the other clubs up North.) they became a big influence on me,(plus many others with different style's e.g. Welly, Nipper, Paul Taylor, Dave Graham, Mike Knowler, Carl Cox, Stu Allen, Vertigo, Rob Tissera, Noggy, Moggy, XTC, Craig C, Bowa, Reg, Lee Garry, Ruddy, Lee Turner and Malc from Wigan Pier plus many many more)

In the mid 90s l was just pumping tunes out at party's and the odd club here and there. l had the chance to play at Monroe's(Blackburn) and Sequins(Blackpool) in the mid 90's but never got to the clubs like a TIT (transport issue's and a too short notice phonecall) BIG REGRETS!!. l did 4 naughty but fun illegal all-nighters in the hills around Haslingden which were mental! until the plod sussed us the Jerters!!!! aswell as other bits n bats but nowt special. Then l got proper job in 1997 PMSL, LOL, ROFL, CIA, SAS, FBI, D.I.S.C.O, RSPCA n all that bollix as a Postie and that started my chillax in the club scene life.

Got into being a hip-hop turntablist (ya know cuttin n scratchin) around 2000/01 for a couple of years on the personal front then gave up thinking it was over!.... How wrong was l. LOL!

2010 Enter Facefook into my life and BOOM!!!!!

And those of you who have attended the Northern Project's party's will vouch this guy knows how to get you on the dancefloor. Ash is a resident DJ for the Northern Project.

PLUS A CLASSIC SPECIAL GUEST P.A.

K-KLASS ft BOBBI (Rhythm is a Mystery, Let me Show You, So Right)

Nights out at the legendary Hacienda “Nude” nights in 1988 led to the meeting of minds and the beginnings of the K-Klass phenomena which took off in 1989.

Originally formed by Paul Roberts, Andrew Williams, Russell Morgan and Carl Thomas, the original idea was just to make a track that would get played in the Hacienda and 18 years later the K-Klass name is still going strong.

K-Klass had already gained underground support for their acclaimed “Wildlife e.p.” released in 1990 before they unleashed their sound onto a nationwide audience with the release of "Rhythm is a Mystery"(No.3 in U.K. Top 40) and the huge "Let Me Show You"(No.13 in U.K. Top 40) as well as a further four U.K. top 40 tunes and 2 K-Klass albums.

In the early days the live show had always been at the fore of the K-Klass ethos and had seen the band play over 200 shows and seen them tour Germany, italy, Spain and Australia between 1989 and 1994 but as the years went by the boys felt that they could reach an audience better in the form of the turntable and mixing desk.

The K-Klass studio bandwagon kept rolling as they moved direction to remixing and producing for other artists. Notable remixes have included the infamous Bobby Brown “2Can Play That Game” and other artists that have had the K-Klass treatment have included Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross , Kylie, New Order, Whitney Houston. The Corrs, Cher, M-People plus another 100 or so that are too many to list (check the discography for full list)

The highlights of their remix career has seen the boys win “International Remixers Of The Year 1995” and seen them nominated for a prestigious GRAMMY award in 2002 for their remix of Samantha Mumba "Baby come On Over".

Paul & Russ had both been Djing since 1990 just doing the occasional one off appearance. But in 1994 the official K-Klass DJ'ing experience began and is a coalition of their illustrious studio endeavours and a fusion of genres embedded in their eighteen year history.

Check out our review from SKIDDLE.COM:

The Northern Project's Old Skool Project @ WN1 (formerly Maximes)

When: 18th September 2010

Reviewed by: Charlie Heap

Line-up: Graeme Park, Mike Knowler, Matt Bell, Triple X, Andy Pendle, Reg, Lee Garry, Ash. Plus a live PA from Dream Frequency.

This was the second night these guys have put on, and after hearing nothing but good things about their first effort - and with a line-up that included Graeme Park, Mike Knowler and Matt Bell - I was ambitious to get there to see what all the fuss was about.

Admittedly, I'm not old enough myself to remember the heyday of such music, but I've always been a big fan of old skool and retro house. And clearly, the organisers do know their old skool business, having been there back in the day. Their knowledge and massive passion for the music shows through their DJing.

There was a brilliant vibe at the event, with no attitudes from anyone. Great music all night, plenty of classics, along with a lot of stuff that I didn't really know - but absolutely loved. And all this blasting through a sound system that really packed some punch. I cannot recommend this night more. It was just a shame that there weren't more people there - hopefully the word will spread.

My highlights have to include the legend that is Graeme Park (Hacienda) playing a good dose of Detroit style acid techno to a packed dancefloor.

I know that Graeme Park was probably "the man" of the night for most people, but for me, Mike Knowler (Quadrant Park) did the business. Mike pulled out all the stops, playing some real classics which included "Inner City - Big Fun" (1988), giving us all a good mix of in your face rave stabs, uplifting vocals and oldskool 303 acid. I couldn't stop smiling all through the set!

I really quite enjoyed the live PA from Dream Frequency, some wicked tunes and those girls have brilliant voices and some quality moves. I'd never heard of them before but I'll certainly be checking them out again.

I'm really looking forward to the next event on the 4th of December with K-Klass. If you're going I'll see you all there - I'll be the one dancing at the front!
