Hi

One of my decks occasionally decides to speed up (really fast) or slow down usually just after i turned it on. It doesn't happen very often but I am thinking its probably about time I got them serviced.

The only slight problem is I'm paranoid about letting anyone loose on my babies.

I live near Epsom so wondered if anyone knew someone in this neck of the woods who could do a service for me - I might as well get both done.

Thanks

most of the people on here are northern based. i'm in hampshire though.
i just googled "technics 1200 servicing surrey" and a few names popped up.
probably best asking on your fb if anyone has used any of them.
other than that you'd have to pack them up and send them to ryan shaw at mastersounds.

More often than not, erratic pitch and bizarre pitch fluctuations relate to a problem with the pitch slider. Over time, wear will mean that the contact between the slider knob and the rail will be compromised at a specific section (or sections across the pitch range) which causes the speeding up/slowing down. You can buy a full pitch assembly with circuit board on Ebay for £36.50 which plugs in and requires no soldering:

TECHNICS PITCH FADER COMPLETE ASSEMBLY WITH PCB SL-1200 SL-1210 MK2 GENUINE | eBay

Could it be something else? Quite possibly, but if you check the youtube videos for fixes to the problem, nearly all will involve the slider. Hope you can get it sorted. I had a similar problem with a budget deck about 20 years ago. One side of zero was super fast, the other super slow for 5mm each side. It does drive you mad!

Thanks for the replies - my thinking is I've had the things 20 years this year and aside from replacing one fuse once they have been perfect so its probably about time they had a look over from someone.

I'd post on fb...but I'm not on it (old git remember and I hate social media), and I wouldn't trust myself to do any soldering on the off chance I messed it up.

I did a Google and found this guy - Quartz Service And Repair - DJ Equipment Service And Repair - Technics Specialist - London - Home - so dropped him a message. Like I say though I'm just paranoid letting anyone loose on them who isn't an expert.

Re up north - thats where I am from and my folks still live near Altrincham so the "ryan shaw" option could be a runner as I go up and visit once in a while.

Though what i am thinking now is I buy a couple of those faders, get the things serviced using Quartz and at the same time pop the new faders in.

Not cheap but like I said they've cost me nothing since the original outlay 20 years ago so I can just about justify it...although not sure the other half would agree...but I'll manage that one :)

Thanks

Do what Ed said & buy the all in one pitch slider if this does not solve the problem you can re-sell it at £35.00 but if this fixes it you have saved yourself a lot of hassle & money & sell the broken one spares repairs.

I fitted new tonearms, new pitches (removed ball bearing & yellow wire) new bulb etc on my decks I decided to give it all a go myself & succeeded which saved me a lot of hassle & money.

I also bought one of these: (to recalibrate the pitch at zero point)
