Wotcha all,

Does anyone have a link to an antibug style webpage? I have a new pc but no protection, and every couple of mins a warning comes up telling me i have yet antother infection. It has gone really slow too, for a high speed bb. I have tried a few but they all want a subscription.

Also, for some reason i can't get the 'at' (as when trying to type an email addy) to work on my keyboard, it just comes up ", so i can't registar with anyone!

Cheers,

Amelie (pc illiterate :S ).

Another vote for AGV via the grisoft site here, really jolly good. Get it installed then run it.

Re the keyboard, it's probably set up as American, @ may be "Shift 2". I think to fix this you need to go into Control Panel keyboard options and switch away from US English. (I might be wrong there though!)

If it's a new PC then I guess you're running XP. Open the security centre with one of the buttons in the bottom right (hover on them until you find the right one) and activate the security settings. The built in firewall in xp is better than none at all! If for some reason you don't trust the windows firewall then zone alarm gets good reports - it's on here if you look carefully, bottom left for the free version http://www.zonelabs.com/store/appli...atalogHome&&zl_catalog_view_id=201&lid=nav_ho

Is it XP? Has it got Service Pack 2?

you need to get service pack 1 or 2 on it immediately, there are worms that will be hitting you as soon as you log on the net.

AVG or anti virus wont stop them, they target vunerable ports in your operating system.

If you need SP2 I can butrn it for you on a disc as I have it on my PC incase I need to rebuild so I can install it before connecting it to the net.

Once you have that on you can then use AVG to clean the worms off, some cause the PC to shut down, so you might need to keep an eye on your processes and kill them when they kick in before they shut down your PC whilst your running the scan

Pm me your addy if you want me to send it over to you hun :)

depends where you get it from really and if they have taken the time to put it.

It would also depend on if the shop where you buy it from has installed the new XP or an older copy and that would all depend on how much you paid for the PC.

From what ive read with it being new and getting immediate viruses I would lay a bet that it wasnt an expensive PC and therefore wouldnt have the new version of XP on it and that means that it doesnt have SP1 or SP2 installed and therefore no protection :)

I've never bothered with SP1 or SP2, for a couple of reasons.

1, I've heard they cock up your pc
2, I've running a dodgy version of XP and can't download them anyway - Cam I've still got that serial number for the next format.

So, what I was wondering, does it affect your pc the same if you're not using IE, coz I'm using firefox???

Soz for the slight hijack... :)

depends on the worm some dont target IE its the ports, Firefox is a hell of a lot more secure than IE but i think its pants personally lol

You can D/L SP2 without doing the auto update mate :)

Ive heard stories of it fooking up PC's but ive never had a problem.

I think the key I gave you was a work one so its pretty cosha ;)

I used to get hit with viruses and bugs all the time and i've lost count of the number of times that i've lost control of my computer

I've been problem free for months now though and it's almost certainly down to Mozilla Firefox (web browser) and AntiVir Guard (both free, unobtrusive, and simple to use)

The only time I get alerts to potential threats now (from my anti virus software) is when I follow links from Outlook Express - which take me onto Internet Explorer.

My advice (which was given to me by the tech heads on another forum) is:

Download and install Mozilla Firefox immediately and use it as your default web browser (it's much safer and it's slightly faster and works just the same)

Download AntiVir Guard (or another good quality anti-virus software protection) :)
