1) Does anyone know what the benefits of Pearlescent paint is?

2) The dealership offers an additional coating option for the interior and exterior (which I assume is like scotchhguard for the interior) and some form of paint treatment ontop of the pearlescent paint. Is this a scam, or will it actually do anything, if so, how will I know theyve applied it :axe:

3) Would you see any reason not to get a dark blue car (paintwork chips, such like, cos obviously it will show white undercoat if chipped, but will it be any worse than dark grey or whatever? Will the pearlescent paint help stop rust and provide a harder "enamel" or whatever in this regard?

4) Would you pay nearly £600 more and wait 6-7 weeks just to order a silver car not a blue one?. (The "deals" on the blue ones they can get hold of, others would have to be specially ordered).

Been having a nightmare at home today, should have decided 100% by now and sorted it, but the way things have happened today its been impossible and low on the priority list. It aint a cheap purchase for me and quite a big deal in my life (first own car). My parents are trying to help, but to say they have thier own worries at the moment is an understatement :(. I keep flipping from a yes to a no, and well, with whats gone on today with family stuff my whole head feels like its in a vise being crushed and cant even think right.

Dont know jack about cars lol. Picked one I like, cheap, economical, small, lowest insurance band, 4 out of five on most ratings I can find, safety is great, it just happens to be on a deal for the end of the month which basically gets me free Air Conditioning worth £500 and about £50 off Pearlescent paint. Insurance will be rougly £550 - £650  , cos Ive only ever been a second driver. Ouch.

1. there aren't really any benefits to pearl paint other than it looks nice!! But if it's scratched or damaged it'll cost more to paint.

2. the exterior coating will be a polimar (sp?) wax. It's deffo not worth the money you'll get charged for it... all new car paint work comes with at least a 3 year warranty anyway.

3. dark blue pearl has a blue or black ground coat (under coat), so you wont see white when it's chipped anyway. The only way it will help against rust is cos it's got an extra layer of paint ie. the ground coat colour on top of the primer.

4. no not for the sake of a colour, pearl blue is a nice enough colour.

good luck with it

How do you know all this? lol.

The dealer told me the pearlescent paint was like metallic, and help stops rust like metallic flakes.......but you know me, Im paranoid enough not to take that at face value.
I believe ordinary paint jobs dull over time, and I know red is a nightmare for it. So Im guessing the pearlescent models will be an advantage later on?...... not that I have a choice If I accept the deal- they are dark/navy blue pearlescent, no option.

I thought the coating option was a bit suspect. Its got three years cover on the car, but I dont know if paint jobs will be included, just incase some idiot showers me with gravel. Can you buy this wax stuff like normal car wax and put it on yourself after youve cleaned it? Or is it more specialised? More to the point, if you think its useless, theres no point.

How do you know that blue paints come with blue or black primer? My parents are warning me about the colour because they had a deep blue metro once in the late 80's and it apparently showed every little mark and always looked dirty all the time. Can you pioint me to somewhere that definately says most cars thesedays come with coloured undercoat?

Its (roughly) this colour on the attachment

Yeah, I know what your saying about the colour issue being finicky and not worth it.....guess Im being a worry pot. Wasnt what I had in mind, I see drawbacks to it, but thats the hand Ive been dealt so either I get in there before they go (theres only 2 available) or I turn it down. :S .

Cheers

I know this cos my b/f is a painter and has worked in main dealers like fords and bmw.

The dealer doesn't know his arse from his elbow, pearls are a bit harder wearing cos of the extra coat of paint but all this metalic flake stuff is pants.

Nowadays red paint doesn't fade because all or at least most new cars come with a top coat of lacquer to stop it oxidising. You can buy car wax from anywere like halfords or even your local super market and it's not a specialised thing, it will help the lacquer last a bit longer and make the car look nice and shiny but it's not something i'd pay a car dealer for when it'll only cost a few quid if you buy it yourself

All pearl painted cars should have a coloured groundcoat, blue will have blue or black and red will have red. They have to use a colour so the pearl effect will work. They do get dirtier quicker though. Normal colours don't use a coloured groundcoat it's just the pearl ones. I know this cos Ste just told me but i have watched him paint loads of times and in the past we've had a pearl blue car that he had to paint and he used a blue ground coat  darker cars will show any dents, scuffs or scratches more than a silver one.

The 3 year cover on the paintwork will be for natural rust(faulty panel), imperfections in the paint and fade or tarnishing of the lacquer but not for rust caused through scratches or damage.

I hope this helps

screw the exterior coating and unless ur going be drinking red wine etc id sack the scotchguard stuff too....rip off

and go with the blue man....im i heard sure silver cars depreciate more

play them as well....say you really want the silver but dont want to wait so theyll have to knock some money off the blue one - more than they have now; theyll be able to its nearly end of the month and theyll be dying for the commission

and dont be afraid to tell em to shove it and go somewhere else...sounds like youve fannied about enough already so a bit longer wont hurt ;)

Cheers :)

You will have saved me some money on that paint coating stuff if I go for the car. I was cynical about it (well, Im always cynical lol) and could recognise a lot of what was obvious slick patter to get me onside (ie tales of the brother in law having x problem etc lol, probably doesnt even have a brother in law lol), but some things you do wonder.

The paint in the broshure says Damas Blue pearlescent, the silver, grey and black are all metallic, and the red is neither. So if I understand you right, the pearlescent makes no difference to rust, unlike metallic? So if I had the choice, Id be better off with a metallic rather than the pearl.....

I cant say Ive been that intensive at looking in showrooms. I need a city car, dont want owt big, something cheap as chips to run and insure, something environmentally freindly, passenger and pedestrian safe, and as its a treat, something that looks good and is lush enough inside for its car class. Didnt like the style of the Getz, cant afford a Honda Jazz, the renualts are looking a bit tired thesedays, dont want a Fiat (heard the most scare nightmares about fiats)......this leaves Citroen, Toyota and Peugot really. And as it happens, theyve all combined to make three city cars at the same plant, the 107, the C1 and the Aygo.

Wading through loads of reviews, the general consensus was the C1 was the best pick for the price, and theyve all got 4 out of 5 ratings, etc. The test drive went okay, nice drive, so I picked the C1 really. The peugot and toyota are almost the same car, just a few body panels are different style.

Might get him to go halves on some mats and front/rear mudflaps lol. He's already throwing in 500 for the air con, and a bit off cos I have no trade in and he wants these two to be cleared before the end of the month.

The only reason i'd go for metalic over pearl is that it shouldn't cost as much if it has to be painted (but not too much more and probably not enough of an issue to decide on one paint over the other) but as far as rust goes really it doesn't matter which you buy  If the car is gonna rust it's gonna rust... simple as.

Your probably right about him not having a brother in law or even a brother :| and dont believe that he's throwing in 500 quids worth of air con for free or doing you a better deal cos you've got no trade in :naughty: tbh the car can probably sell for a lot less than he's telling you but he'll make it sound like he's doing you a favour... like johns_ar has said he'll be working towards his comission so it'll be important to sell you this car to you... but make that work in your favour and try and get as much thrown in as you possibly can. Every dealer ship you go to will be the same, they're your best mate blah blah blah so don't be put off by this one lol. Get him to throw the mats and mudguards in for free if you possibly can ;)

and dont be afraid to tell em to shove it and go somewhere else

yep
