I use bit torrent to and I've had my first letter from my ISP.

thing is the reason the companies in the states are leaning on the ISP's and not the users is because they can't do anything to people in the UK, at most get your ISP to drop you.

The scare tactics seem to be working though with everyone running round like headless chickens.

the letter are simply cease and desist mails, asking you to kindly stop what you're doing and of course delete the files.

so of course that's what you do.

I haven't used bit torrent (spit) don't like the sound of it, as you can't cap speeds on it (from what I've heard anyhoo)

I use and have used edonkey, emule, currently using emuleplus, which rocks :)

I've had a letter from my ISP via one of the big movie companies stating details of a file I was sharing at one time, it is scare tactics, and I was cheeky enough to e-mail both my ISP and the film company back (I just didn't give a flying fuck) saying:

"yeah, well so big deal, you caught me with my pants down, however, the movie I had downloaded and was sharing, I had already pre-ordered on play.com, but wasn't out for 3 months, showing them a screen cap of my play account, and further advising them I had seen it at the cinema, I enclosed a scan of my cinema ticket."

They of course weren't interested in all that, nor were they interested to hear my theory on P2P progs in general, and how they generate sales of CD's and DVD's (I run a small record label myself, and know for a fact that using soulseek has generated more sales of my albums)

All the movie company said was

"Thanks for deleting the file."

My ISP said "Thanks for deleting the file, you probably wouldn't have been caught if you weren't sharing the file"

So, lessen learnt, as soon as files complete now, I've set up a rule to move them to another folder.

While a movie file is downloading the .part files for it are automatically shared, so I still file share, as I'm getting it, other people are uploading it from me, it's just when it completes I move it.

Anyone using soulseek and sharing more than 1000 files had better be careful, as the RIAA and UK are going to start targetting people sharing more than 1000 mp3 files and or more than 1 movie file (I've seen this on p2pforums, a messageboard for all things p2p)

FTP from a server is good, but I've tried FTP sharing from pc to pc and it wasn't very good, as my ISP caps the upload to 28k (1meg connection)

So it's ok for me getting from others, but they'll have slow transfers.

What I have heard a lot about (mainly people in the USA doing this) is, HDD swaps.

People use these hot plugable hard drives, and fill them with media, movies/mp3s/software/porn etc, and swap drives with others, so you'll get 40gig at a time, nice if it's in a circle of people you know and/or trust, I reckon that'll be a good way what with firewire / usb2 drives...

Sounds like a good idea. I am sure people who get stuff off me are getting good speeds so i will continue for the time being but sooner or later file sharing will be no more i reckon
