Audio mix tapes 1988-91 (how to enhance audio?)

I have roughly a few dozen oldschool tapes I want to rip then enhance audio then share with people.
Now I know how to rip the tapes but a few of them need audio enhancement naturally looking for the idea of what software is best.
I have windows but also have the use of a mac 10.6 so any platform specific software (free or nonfree) is no problem.

Any input welcome.

Is it poss to record an old tape on to your pc thro the mic input, had some joy recording but the sound isnt right. cheers M

Sure, many things out there to do that, LP to MP3 is just one option.
