If Bootlegs are illegal how come shops get away with sellin them?

Pretty much all of the record shops sell them, many brand new and have done for years.

Iv always wondered this?

I personally aint got nowt against bootys to be honest, but understand why some people do have major issues with em.

I just see them as havin certain pros n cons

Pros :)

1. Cheap
2. Easy to get hold of that elusive tune on a booty
3. Saves you knackerin your orig, especially if ya scratch phones:
4. Provide interestin topics for debate on OSA :p

Cons :(

1. Often poor quality
2. ilegal :cops:
3. You have somethin that was worth £200 one week, booty comes out its only worth say £60
4. The way your cash is distributed (complex one that, artists, owners etc)

Im not advocatin shop the shops :S just wondered if anyone knows

Probably because a lot of the smaller independants don't have the finances/resources to fight for their share of royalties and the larger record companies see the records as promo tools used by dj's to help their artists sell their cd's, plus because the booties are usually available in limited quantities :)

Its not just down to record companies to make shops stop sellin bootys, Id have though that someone at some stage must have complained to the police?

I thought that the probable reason was cos the police cant be assed to enforce that particular part of the law (and to be honest Id agree there time would be better spent solvin more serious crimes)

Plus theres that other organisation that protects copyrights etc. (Think its the British Phonographic or some other Artist/Performing rights body :S )

Some bootys have been goin for years, I reckon the 'Knights' series must have been goin for nearly 10 years

They will chase down bootleg cd vendors though, because those guys hurt the sales that matter.

Do you see where i'm coming from here? :)

I hate booties, theiving gypo's behind them  ,

if you want it....buy the original........cheap skate!!!

even worse them bloody nasty s12 repress...load a shite wouldn't touch them with yours.

((edit: watch the bickering start ;) )))

I know u hate Bootys Rob  ... and your certainly not on your own. Thats why Id be suprised if no-one has ever tried to stop shops sellin em.

Look at your mates htfr :p , who sell both originals and bootys/copys... whats the difference between say Selfridges sellin real Armani jeans and also sellin some cheaper Armani copies - it would never be allowed to happen!

And they often do provoke a good old debate here ;) ,

Yeah I thinks thats the reason too

Thats interestin about ebay, cos they have banned me from sellin my own personal mixes because I haven't recieved permission from the 'intellectual owners' of the music :(

Totally see where you're coming from there mate. That's the most annoying aspect of eBay for me - searching for tracks, then having to check if they're booties....it wastes valuable time too  :|
