Bugger WAV recording gaps bollocks

This is really annoying me................

When I record a WAV from mixer to pc via normal headphone jack socket I get a small gap appearing during playback.

This lasts only about less than half a second. There is no actual gap in the music but you can tell very obviously as the gap between two beats alters i.e. is reduced as the PC seems to have missed recording about half a second of music. It sounds just like when a record jumps slightly but in reality it hasn't.

PC has about 20GB of drive space and there is only 4GB left. But i never get close to filling this as i always delete when i've burnt a wav file to CD.

Why does this keep happening and how can I stop it????

Does anyone else have the same problem????

By the way I use Audio Cleaning Lab to record the wav.

Defrag your hard drive.

The usual cause of audio dropout is due to fragmented files.

Someone else suggested this. I tried defraging the other week. Left my pc running for about 2 hours, came back home, and the thing was still on 0% complete!!! So I aborted this!!!!

Maybe I should try again!

Any ideas why this would be. It usually registers more than 0% after 2 hours even if it does take a while to complete???

Always used to happen to me that, always told to defrag, used a few diff progs (windows built in one is a total nause apparently) and always got stuck or had to give up cos it looked liek it was gonna take 3 weeks or somat.

theres one called 0&0 defrag tho, works a treat...think ya suppose to pay for it...but hey...this in the internet...if ya know what i mean

get the latest version of diskeeper as it does it continuously in the background or you can set to specific dates/times if wanted.

Still having problems!!!

Downloaded the Diskeeper defrag program. Before I used it Windows Explorer was saying I had 2GB free memory. Used the Diskeeper. Results said that I now had over 7GB of free memory. It also said that the defrag had been 100% successful. Output showed that theoretical read time was now the same as actual read time, whereas before it had been about 75% slower due to defragmentation! So I think, OK the drive has been fully defragmented.

Recorded about a 60 mins mix at the weekend. There are still about 3 or 4 of these "gaps or missed audio still happening!! Really don't know what the problem could be now.

Thinking back, the only time I never had one of these gaps was the very first time I used this pc for recording WAV's.

Any ideas now what the problem might be???

I find this problem if I don't run Windows Scan Disk first. Run that, then run the Defrag

If you've got a newtwork cable, try unplugging it. I had the same problem a while back and the network cable was the cause. F*ck knows why like!

Gav m8..... I had the same problem a while back...did me in for months.

Tryed to Defrag the disc but kept hanging at 65% - this usually is not a good sign and means your drive is probably on it's last legs

I ended up replacing the HD and upgrading my ram - that cured the problem.

It then started to happen again a few months later..... So I ended up ditching my computer and buying a new one. LOL an expensive way of curing the problem but it worked

Tim, I think your problem relates to what I am experiencing. The more you seem to record audio the worse the problem seems to get. Hence the defrag! But mine is worse than ever even though defrag was 100% completed!

I'm also gonna try stopping all unnecessary programs running in the background whilst recording.

Can't see it myself as my PC used to record OK to start with but now it is knacked!!! This leads me to think hard drive?!?!?!?!

More than likely the HD gav...especially if it will run scandisk 100%.... also change your RAM (or add more to it) - as sometimes RAM can get corrupt too.

No not at all. It happened to me whilst using Soundforge 4.5 and 5.0 on two different PC's, one which was SCSI 9 + 18Gb drives, and another that had a 20gig 5400rpm drive in it.

Both suffered the same symptoms, and whilst recording, the running timing display would often stop running after say 30 mins of recording.

I asked a mate at the time who was more clued up on PC's and he suggested defragging the drives, I did so and problem solved

I have used stand alone hard disk recording and never had any trouble with those, maybe they handle it better

Ok so its not a defrag problem - have you tried updating your soundcard drivers to the latest ones available and adjusted the cards latency.
Also try disabling your anti virus whilst trying to record, as the PC might be trying to start a real time virus scan.
Failing that then tims Idea of a new HDD plus RAM sounds like the ideal option.
Also try Wavelab - never had any problems with it.

It just puzzles me why its happening more and more now - the latest time the audio dropped out about 6 times in an hour!!! It never used to do that. ALthough there is less free memory on the pc now.

Will give your suggestions a try anyway.

This used to always happen to me. Still happens every now & again but most of the time its fine. Anyways, I sorted it by making sure there were no unnecessary background programs running like Realplayer or software uopdaters etc. Check your desktop toolbar and click on the arrow to see what background programs are running and switch off any you don't need. This can also be done by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete once and selecting from the list.
Proggies like Messenger, etc. use up ram and always keep your pc thinking so its best to close them down and disconnect from the internet.

This should sort out the problem

yep everytime my system buffered I used to get that problem - so I put it down to a memory issue and the fact my HD was fecked :S
