Cant Delete A File

Could be simple but theres a bloody great big file on my computer that I cant get rid of

I tried downloading an avi of the new Harry Potter, it doesnt work and now I cant delete it cos it says the file is in use by another person or program,even though no other programs apart from explorer are open, even tried deleting it in DOS and nope

Any ideas before I bin the laptop

Have you tried booting in safe mode and deleting it that way? Or try putting it into quarantine using your antivirus software, and then deleting it.

Neil, it could be a problem with XP and long filenames.

You tried rebooting and seeing if you can delete the file then ?

If that doesn't work

You can delete from the DOS prompt usually..

Start>Run

Type "cmd" (without the speechmarks)

then navigate to where the file is;

then to delete a file type:

del myfile.avi*

*myfile being the name of the file

Sorted it, the Safe Mode thing worked, cheers ILP, completely forgot you could do that

I started pissing around with setting permissions in DOS using attrib command and got frustrated cos it wasnt working:mad:

Thats the last time I bother downloading fillums off Limewire, going to try that Azerus like you said Scott

Glad you got it sorted.

Just out of interest, does anyone know why yhis happens? Coz I've had a couple of files that I've had a few issues with when trying to delete them. Video, pics and even the .dat files from Kazaa.
