Adobe Audition used to be called Cool Edit before Adobe took over it. They're kind of one and the same. Not used the latest version of Audition, but I can't see that it'll have changed that much from the older versions and the original Cool Edit.

Aye, that's me. Been a bit slack with it recently, had other stuff to be getting on with. I'll get back into the swing of things soon

For simplicity, I'd go with Cool Edit. For more advanced features, us Audition. Cool Edit is my preferred choice as you only need basic features such as EQ, Level Control, etc. Pops and crackles can be limited using Cool Edit too.

Cool edit any day or Soundforge. Cool edit went down the pan when Adobe took over and turned it Audtion. You'd probably be better of using Cool Edit as it has a way smaller footprint on your PC and seems really snappy on newer PC's these days.

My personal preference is Soundforge with a few VST's for the restoration.
