I think most will agree that cover versions are usually really really wank, and very rarley make the as good as, if not better than the org.

After much thinking, the only cover i can think of that is better is Stevie Wonder with 'We Can Work it Out', which is obviously a Beatles classic (tho not a fave of mine). IMHO he not only sings it better (his vioce just seems made for it), but the whole music sounds far more catchy, and obviously soulfull thus more erm, meanigfull.

Anymore for anymore?

:)

Also, just remembered that St Etienne's 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' is miles and miles better than Neil Young's.

I thought that the Stereophonics did a superb cover of the Rod Stewart classic 'Handbags & Gladrags'

I do prefer the Stereophonics version to be honest phones:

I do love that song :)

I like lots of cover versions i think, but im sure people would disagree if I said they were better than the originals.

Fugees Killing Me Softly has come to mind because it was on the radio today........but thats all I can think of right now

oasis I am the walrus
tainted love is also better than the original
Which Tainted Love, the Marilyn Manson one? I agree its good, i like the darkness of it all, but somehow i thnk the orig sounds more angst.

I have to say i preffer the Beatles version of Walrus, then again i dislike all things Oasis, cept of course Talk Tonight and Acquiesce. Funny cos i always disliked the Gallager bro's- Liam in partic, but these days i am warming to them, (Noel can be quite funny when interviewed). Personality wise that is, i still think they are a very average band musically.

Do you mean the Soft Cell tainted love or the original norther soul version (think it was Gloria Jones, or something like that)?

I can't stand the MM version, utter shite, but then I find him like some weird comic book Victorian sideshow with very little to say that appeals to me. But I realise some people think he's great.

I love the Manson, but thats another story from way back when I was a full blown goth. Always preffered the northern soul tainted love version myself.

Ed if we ever meet, you will see clearly the physical and mental scars i bear from a whole childhood listening to Neil Young and watching the Young Ones over and over. Neil is great, don't get me wrong, but fuck he was over played in our our house for a good decade, to the point where now when i hear his Canadian drawly voice, i actaully wet myself.

 I played that at me mate's wedding at the w/e too - firm fave of mine - used to get hammered at a night called Sweat @ Brum Institute about 1994 (TC / Ed did you make it to these uns ?)

I love the ironic way that Stevie sings the lyrics "Try to see it my way...." If only we could eh Stevie.... (NB tongue in cheek before I get slagged for 'picking on the blind' )

As for other cover versions these are most mentionable:

Whyte - Purple Haze (dodgy pic sleeve aside :S )
Voodoo Child - forgotten artist - samples b line from Mantronix - Got to have your love with Voodoo Chile lyrics
Jam on the mutha - Hotel California
Moodswings - Spiritual High (wicked use of State of Independance lyrics sang by Chrissie Hynde)

Possibly. 94 is a bit of a blur. They used to play stuff like that at Tressines, which was a Mon or Tues or Thurs I think. THat was a good night. NWA, THe Doobie brothers. Loads of funk and soul.
