I found this The 7 Deadly Sins Of DJing | Digital DJ Tips interesting and yes, I have thought along these lines myself in the past as i've tried all sorts of turntables, mixers, set ups, Serato Scratch Live, Traktor Scratch even a CD deck once looking for a perfect set up and yet, at the end of the day, while I have bought some new toys to play with from time to time, when I play out or play at home I still prefer the 2 turntables and a fairly standard mixer (using Serato scratch live at times to fill in for the tunes I don't have.)

''7. Lust
Hey hey, it’s everyone’s favourite sin! But seriously, lust is destructive. What I am talking about here is not shagging the promoter’s girlfriend (although that’s usually pretty inadvisable), but rather: Gear lust.

Here’s a big truth: You can DJ on pretty much bloody anything. Never forget that the scene you know and love was built on gear that didn’t change for decades. It’s only recently that people have begun to believe that you need the latest and greatest gear just to get your foot in the door.

'Two Technics and a standard mixer'

For many, many years, this was basically it for DJ gear. While I wouldn’t like to return to those days, I do think DJs nowadays need to worry less about what they’re using, and more about what they’re doing.

Sure, gear is good. Sure, you can do cool things with it. Sure, we love it as much as the next DJs do. But “real” DJs settle on what they’re happy with, then concentrate on their craft. Hint: It’s about music, not Midi. It’s about people, not products. It’s about feelings, not functions.

The bottom line: Pick and set up your DJ gear carefully, then forget about it. Only change your gear when you really have to. Concentrate on the real skills, not the “next big thing”.''

"two decks and a mixer" reminds me of an mc from bitd..

I've never gone down the laptop route but think i probably would if I had the money. There is so much gear out there to keep you interested. I've had lenghty breaks from my technics in the past but always gravitate back to them. They are my children

ps you should spin on here more often Jiglo

Brilliant, couldn't agree more. We all say every dj should use decks but its what they are comfortable using. As it says, pick it and then forget about it and just use it.

Most DJ's are gonna be vinyl junkies, if they old.....school like me anyways, but I gotta say, we grabbed every oportunity to expand the mixing possibilities as they came, from recording and playback on tape, then MD, then DAT, then CD quality became standard and FX units were incorperated, sampling and looping straight from the mixer was hard to do on the fly, even with the better Numark desks of the time, so I used to take a portable Mini Disc Player/rec to fire pre-mixed edits in with...and/or record myself...lol...thought about bootlegging the nights but was quickly shown the light...lol...nuff said!
When I got MY hands on it all, and started putting my own events on...I used to have all my stuff running through a Mackie 1604 to intergrate some FX untis, a sampler and also compression and limiting as the club system was very basic and tended to overload.
So what I'm gettin round to sayin is....I want it all, cd decks, vinyl, digital straight from the lappy, cos you CAN edit and remix stuff on the fly with nowadays tech...if you check out my OSA mixcloud mix, you will see that when it sounds like 3 decks, it's actually just 2 and a digital console "mix" being brought in as if it were another turntable...so effectively 4 decks (or more as they're vitual) at your disposal...and the only time it sounds a bit "non vinyl" is if I use a track that was downloaded as opposed to home recorded.

Your Mixing Achievements Could be Held Back By Not Letting It All Out Of The Bag...

Plus...You can also seriously expand your record collection , overnight...for nothing, download Wavepad from nch...for nothing, and edit and remix untill you got that perfect mixing track.
I still have and use my old Numark icue...almost every time I turn on the setup...if I'm just blobbing...I would rather leave the vinyl where it is, your music is also available for any media player to randomly shuffle thru it.

lol..Fk me...I can go on a bit...but that's just my opinion, never been a purist or had blinkers on...adapt, improvise and overcome....per fkn ardua ad astra..sumthin...lol.
