Normally find this company's products to do a dandy job Allok - 3GP PSP MP4 IPOD MPEG4 Converter, QuickTime Converter, RMVB Converter, MOV Converter, FLV Converter, AVI to DVD, RM to MP3 Converter, Movie Converter, Video Splitter, Video Joiner, DivX Converter,AMR Converter
i always use this SlySoft CloneDVD mobile | DVD to PSP, DVD to iVideo, DVD to ZEN
converts full movies etc and very easy to use,you can have a free trial to here

now if its movies you want 2 back up you will probs come across copy protection and will need a tool to remove it which is Illegal but if you have brought the dvd, and i dont see why you should not be able to put it onto your ipod etc IMO,,,,, i wont tell ya what ya need here as i might get told off just drop me a pm 
I have put loads of films on my zen with the above prduct, such as casino lord of war and so on and the picture is 100% and sound is ace
