Calling all techies!

Which of the numerous firewalls on the market are actually any good, and which should be avoided?

Aye I wouldn't bother if you have a router, you'll be hidden behind that via an internal IP address, so the outside world can't connect until you open certain ports (forwarding) on the router.

The likes of Zone Alarm are shite, don't bother with them.

Ah, I was wondering if that was the case, coz I just sorted out connection with a router and my Norton "subscription" was about to expire. So I thought it was about time to nob it off and try something new.

What I'm curious about though is this...

If you're using a router, how does it know what data going in or out is ok? It doesn't flash up on screen saying what might be a threat and do you want to allow it, so what's the crack with that?

Firewalls also stop programs dialin out from your P.C.
So for example the music app i downloaded and ahem "patched" cannot dial home and check its a legit version.
For this reason i use zonealarm free, not for any actual protection as i am behind a router but just to tell me whats being sent out from my computer.

Also NOD32 that Butty mentioned is a top anti virus and imo is the best out there, well worth payin for a full version.
I think the best free anti virus is Avira Antivir which seems better than AVG imo
