Bootleg has probably got it down right. There were lots of posts on the 4 website, and many gypsies/travellers had written responses. Most of all, they were terrible at spelling, what sort of education do the majority get? One put something interesting about how they were a Romany gypsy, and to not believe that all Gypsies are like the ones in the film.
It was all very patriarchal though...all the girls running round in the skimpiest of skimpies...socialised into that lifestyle from the day they're born..."marriage is the ultimate goal/looking after your man, keeping ur legs shut for when ur husband comes along (who actually doesn't have to be a virgin n can do what the fuck he likes), the outside world is very badd (not really that bad, probably the same I'd guess), and WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS GRABBING THING?!?!?!?! the girl looked upset, but daren't have shown it. It's almost like a cult.
They may have 'morals', but what about all the domestic abuse that goes on (which is very high amongst traveller communities), lack of education. etc.
But really, who am I to judge, we're all in our own crazy little world one way or another...I don't think I realise how much until I see people conducting 'living' in a completely different way.
***For the program makers***
Mixed messages guys, typical 'shockumentary'. It was like a gossip collumn in a documentary, which is bad. These people in the film, will not have the foggiest of how they're really being portrayed (they don't have our mind set, so they'd never get the semiotic/symbolic messages put over thru editing). eg - when a girl is talking about being 'moral' and the visual is of a girl wearing a g-string in church...to her, thats fine, but she won't know how millions will be judging. naughty!
The girls are a lot more blessed with the 'good looking' gene.:|
Where the hell do they get all of the cash to pay for these dresses, they cost 10s of thousands sometimes, yet the live in shit (I don't mean the vans...just the general muck about).
phew x
