Help connecting a games console (xbox 360) to High def TV

My sons xbox 360 works via ext on normal res. I've changed the xbox to high def and switched the lead - putting the 3 high def connections into the correct tv points. How do I get it on now? do I have to tune it or is there a setting for all incoming high def on tvs? Its a Hitachi if makes any difference. ::$ :$ :$

It should just be available under 1 of the AV channels. I suggest if possible to buy a HDMI cable much better and will give full HD.
