Right, with no luck on the soundcards not the nvidea or the Soundblaster Audigy zs regarding the recording front, my restore points going missing, and a scarily slow web browser lately, I think it may be time for a format of the C partition and reinstalling windows - Primarily to try and sort the soundcard scenario out because Im getting really stuck now. I may have to return the soundblaster product if it still doesnt record after Ive reset it up :(. So, I suppose Id better get on with it whilst I have some sort of returns rights cos it wasnt cheap....

Ive baught some DVD disks to back up all my data just in case and will probably be doing that tonight and tomorrow just incase I inadvertantly cleanse all the partitions by mistake.
The thing thats worrying me is that even if I can find my WindowsXP Install CD again (could be bloody anywhere) I would be missing crucial updates to the windows files, as last time it would not let me update via the Windows Update function because of a dodgy release lol. Therefore, last time, when I was trying to get the patches, I was attacked in under 15 seconds of being online lol.
Im not sure how I managed it last time, Ill have to search back and find it if I can.

What Im longwindedly getting round to is does anybody have a package of vital windows patches since service pack one? or perhaps a list of crucial update files I can download so I wont get infected as soon as I redo the computer as I wouldnt be able to get them without going on the net, so therefore Im looking at getting them now and sticking them on a DVD disc ready.

Also a quick refresher of the proceedure would be good. Im thinking of whazzing the XP CD in the drive, rebooting, starting from cd, choosing to boot from CDrom, then choosing install, then overwriting or formatting (if there is an option) the C partition and letting it roll. Hopefully my other partitions and data will be safe.

Thanks peeps

Sirius.

One thing I would say is before you go online to download the windows updates and patches, install your firewall first or you'll have that bloody blaster virus and god knows what else within about 10 seconds of going online.....

Get the network version of SP1 from here

Get this zip file from here as it will allow you to make a valid key for SP1 (make sure this is the first thing you do as soon as windows is installed, do it before installing drivers/SP1).

Your Soundstorm probs seem strange make sure you get the Nforce driver pack from here

Thanks guys :)

Im having a bit of bother though.......Ive shifted anything important off the C drive, dug out the XP CD and a few security patches thats on it, all my driver discs for the components etc etc.......however, I cannot get the CD to boot up from the start up proceedure. It must not be a 'bootable' installation disc.

What do I need to do to get it running? Ive made sure the boot sequence is right, it spins the disc says its reading it, but carries on without the prompt to boot from CD and just loads windows again as usual.

I have my dads XP home CD too, will I have to put that on, then upgrade it somewhow?

I need to format the C Partition (and pray all my other partitions stay intact as the DVDr isnt liking it at the minute ("laser power error" etc) so I cant back up) and get stuff going again and then make sure the soundcard is not damaged.

I dunno what I can do do get the CD going without trying to upgrade my dads Home Edition......any ideas chaps. My brother says to format a partition fat32 and copy the CD to it then boot to dos and install from there or something but its going to be too cmplicated for me and besides I havent any spare partitions.

Cheers

Sirius.

paul....afaik all full versions of xp are bootable. You're not doing something daft like not pressing a key when it says "press key to boot from cd" are you?

If you miss doing that it will go striaght onto the next drive that contains an xp installation and boot that up

whoops....just read that it doesnt come up with the boot from cd prompt....you could try sticking your cd on one IDE and HD(s) on other. Then disable the HD IDE in your bios and see what happens. There wont be an alternative installation to boot from then and you might get an error message or something that gives you a clue.

Alternatively.....make a boot disk (dont forget the CD drivers) and set Floppy as first boot drive. Once at the command prompt install from the CD

Should work!
