What a great gig this was last night!!!!
As I got there Utah Saints were on cranking some new shit out, then 808 State came on with Cubik, Pacific and MC Tunes made an appearance with them for 'The Only Rhyme That Bytes' fecking amazing sets!! I'd happily pay good money to see a full set by 808 State again
A few other bands came on interspersed with DJ's playing between sets. Parksy playing some squelchy remix of 'Strings Of Life' etc, Mani playing Happy Mondays & Stakker Humanoid (nice short set ) and a couple of other DJ's with short funky sets including Mr Scruff .
A bit of Metal from Nine Black Alps, a bit of folk music from Stephen Fretwell, then Badly Drawn boy entertained us with his remake of Madonna's 'Like A Virgin' in his trio of songs
Next up (I think) was Elbow - not really my cup of tea but an ok set. Then Johnny Marr Fercking brilliant set started with a cracking song and I wish I knew what it was, later brought on Andy Rourke and performed 'How Soon Is Now' and everybody in the audience sang along
Next up The Doves who really surprised me with a brilliant set of 5(ish) tracks, brought on Badly Drawn Boy for a song, then brought on Marr and Bernard Sumner for a track, the Marr stayed on for another track. A great set but I had my camera set on video in case they performed 'Space Face', unfortunately they didn't but the night wasn't really about them so they mixed it up a little with other artists, which worked really well
Finally New Order came on and the crowd went mental, some good solid rock tracks, then they performed 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' fercking brilliant, had us all singing along they played some other tracks and kept us entertained with their brand of bad mouthed humour, then finished. The lights stayed off though so we knew there was going to be something else going to be coming on I was praying that Morrissey would come on and reform The Smiths seeing as it was all in aid of cancer awareness and fundraising, but alas he didn't
Almost every artist came back on for a big jam session at the and I noticed Shaun Ryder was there singing. Bez came on dancing like a loon shaking his tambourine and trying to focus his eyes on the microphone stand The guy's a superstar and had me pissing my sides
All in all a quality night and showed just how great and important Manchesters artists were to world music. Probably one of the best gigs ever!
