I have managed to find one or two old skool tunes I've been after on either winmx (www.winmx.com) or soulseek (www.soulseek.org)

The problem is at the moment there are loads of p2p proggies around and everyone's using different ones!!!

kazaa ain't so bad, just depends on who's online at the time you do your search. Get it from www.kazaalite.com to get the version without spywear in it.

Kazaa lite is just as spyware infected as its big brother. I have a specially treated version of kazaa lite that has been stripped of all spyware. Anyone wants it then pm me ;)

The key way to tell is via the top left menubar icon... if its red your clean otherwise ph33r !!!

Not tried it myself but a friend of mine uses bearshare from http://www.bearshare.net. Not checked the spyware content but my mate gets a lot of tunes from it (rock music)

i think you should do a google search on kazaa & spyware..

spyware - it started out as people just tracking your internet behaviour, what sites you got to etc but now there are some damaging spyware components out there, that'll feck your machine up if you try and remove them etc.

i'd also suggest downloading ad-aware, a free programme that finds spyware components on your pc..if you're lucky you'll have just a few but more than likely a few hundred..which is what i found on my machine - and i thought i was being careful :axe:

There are four main things you need to be aware of when downloading stuff:

1) Viruses
2) Trojans/backdoors
3) Spyware
4) Adware

1 & 2 are easily stopped with a virus scanner and the latest virus signatures.

3 & 4 are big brother tactics. Adware is the part of the program that displays adverts etc. Spyware is the next step to this where big brother collects the information of things you download and websites you visit. For example, doubleclick.net was one of the biggest arseholes in this arena. Imagine this scenario:

200 sites decide to host an invisible gif on their server. This gif is hosted at a central server. You visit the first site and login and make a purchase. The central server now has your IP and name, every site you visit afterward also has this gif. The site now has a profile of your internet habits and all the adverts you see will be directed to your habits.

This company now sells this information to other companies who now also know you subscribe to big jugs weekly.

Then if you add a tool such as kazaa to the equation, you download a program that has this fuctionality built-in. It can watch where you visit, what you download etc etc. This information can be sent back to a central server.

And it does get worse, this is just the tip of the iceburg.

Have a look at:

http://www.spyware.co.uk
http://www.spychecker.com/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

I highly recommend that you use local proxy tools (I use proxomitron) that changes HTTP headers and controls what cookies you accept, diables js etc etc. Always check if the tool is spyware (above links).

Always remember you are not anonymous on the web unless you take active counter measures such as anonymous proxies. If you want some more info then I'd be pleased to help... erm, not that I have anything to hide Mr FBI, NSA, MI6, CIA. I was on holiday at the time... I have witnesses ok ;)

Hope that help Phil ;)

Many thanks for the information guys, this is fascinating stuff.

For the past few months or so I've used a virus checker (currently use Panda Antivirus Platinum which is automatically updated when I connect), and I also use Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall.

In the past I've had a couple of minor incidents with viri etc, and was once infected with a Sub Seven trojan. That was quite an unplesant experience, but a quick re-format of my H/D and installation of a Virus Checker sorted that.

This Spyware stuff is quite scary - I'm now totally paranoid about my net useage!. Oh no, what if someone finds out I actually visited www.kylie.com and holly.valance.net !!!. :$

I don't really know about Proxxies n' such, so would be grateful for any further advice you could off to help me get my system (and personal details) more secure. (PM me if you prefer).

Thanks again fellas, I thought I was "ou-fe" with computers n' such, I guess not!.

Phil,

Go to http://www.proxomitron.org and download a copy of the proxomitron. When you install it you need to tell your browser to use a proxy, go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings. Check the box, and the proxy address is 'localhost' and the port number is '8080'. Thats it !! your cooking :)

Have a read through the proxomitron site. There's lots of extra filters you can download. The basic install of proxomitron can:

Stop or limit Pop-up windows
Control MIDI music and other sounds
Freeze animated .GIFs - load only the first frame
Kill most all advertising banners
Stop Web-Branding and other scripts added by web space providers
Stop Pop-up alert/confirm boxes
Remove slow web counters
Stop web pages and ads from "auto-refreshing"
Remove Dynamic HTML
Prevent getting stuck in someone's frames
Remove frames or tables altogether for that matter
Kill or change selected Java scripts and applets
Add your own scripts to pages!
Remove or replace web page and/or table background images
Stop Status bar scrollers
Unhide URLs obscured by status line text
Convert blinking text to bold
Remove Layers and Style sheets
Automatically re-write or redirect URLs
Create lists of sites to block or allow
Create similar lists for just about anything else
And as they say, much, much more...

You can feed a list of public proxies into the tool and every web request you make will be sent to a different proxy. Just in case you don't know.... a proxy is just a server that makes requests on behalf of another system. So... you send your request to a proxy and the proxy connects to the website on your behalf and sends the results back to you :)

That means that the website has the IP of the proxy in its logs and not yours :)

You want to use anonymous proxies.... some public proxies will make the request but add an extra header to the request stating who it making the request for :( Anonymous proxies don't do this... so get one of those.

Here's a few lists of public proxies available:

http://tools.rosinstrument.com/proxy/
http://www.novelsoft.com/dark/proxy/main.htm
http://www.multiproxy.org/

You need to find a site like www.whatsmyip.net to test that the correct IP is being displayed... or find a site that runs a whoami service that displays all the headers if you want to be sure :)

You can use a tool like 'proxyhunter' to find unlisted proxies and its pretty fast for class c networks. But I may be going to far to fast. Try proxomitron and feel free to ask any question either publically, pm or email :)

The next lesson will be shell bouncing, wingates and proxy chaining ;)

I hope this was of some use.

Fug,

You are a gentleman and a scholar!...

I'm now about to print out your recent post, and take it downstairs where I can hopefully digest it with the aid of a large cup of coffee....

Thanks again mate!!!

Expect plenty of "I'm stuck" PM's in the next hour or so!.
