There are four main things you need to be aware of when downloading stuff: 1) Viruses 2) Trojans/backdoors 3) Spyware 4) Adware 1 & 2 are easily stopped with a virus scanner and the latest virus signatures. 3 & 4 are big brother tactics. Adware is the part of the program that displays adverts etc. Spyware is the next step to this where big brother collects the information of things you download and websites you visit. For example, doubleclick.net was one of the biggest arseholes in this arena. Imagine this scenario: 200 sites decide to host an invisible gif on their server. This gif is hosted at a central server. You visit the first site and login and make a purchase. The central server now has your IP and name, every site you visit afterward also has this gif. The site now has a profile of your internet habits and all the adverts you see will be directed to your habits. This company now sells this information to other companies who now also know you subscribe to big jugs weekly. Then if you add a tool such as kazaa to the equation, you download a program that has this fuctionality built-in. It can watch where you visit, what you download etc etc. This information can be sent back to a central server. And it does get worse, this is just the tip of the iceburg. Have a look at: http://www.spyware.co.uk http://www.spychecker.com/ http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ I highly recommend that you use local proxy tools (I use proxomitron) that changes HTTP headers and controls what cookies you accept, diables js etc etc. Always check if the tool is spyware (above links). Always remember you are not anonymous on the web unless you take active counter measures such as anonymous proxies. If you want some more info then I'd be pleased to help... erm, not that I have anything to hide Mr FBI, NSA, MI6, CIA. I was on holiday at the time... I have witnesses ok ;) Hope that help Phil ;) --- Fug
