I would deffo appreciate your opinions on the needles that out there nowadays, I like to throw the record about a bit so was going for a concord style cartridge with a pro scratch needle, I assume you can change for a different needle at lesser expense by just replacing the tip.

I think I will have a dabble at the deck shop...but thanks guys, do you set your own arm geometry up or take it to a shop...is there a walk thru or similar, think i just did it by trial and error in the past but cant remember what i was doing really.

The shop owner actually recomended the sure ones straight away as a multi-purpose great allrounder, but in the end I went for some Ortofon Concords, the scratch version this time...but they're etremely versatile as you can change the stylus without changing the cartridge...plus...they're easy for a pill addled old timer like me to see where they're going down.
I have balanced the arm to the specifics given with the Ortofons (4 grams) but am still a bit unsure where the optimum position is for the tower, 0 - 6mm rise on the scale, plus a bit more off the scale...not critical I know, but have been using decks scince 91 and should know this by now really.

I'm using the Concorde Scratch carts too and the great thing about them is they don't need setting up, but the downside is they're expensive.

I'm planning on giving the Shure M44-7's a try at some point soon though. I'm way overdue for trying them out in my own set up as i've known about them for nearly 20 years as being the old school carts of choice for DMC turntablists.

This is a great site that I found recently that gives you a wealth of information and tools for accurate setting up carts, calibrating platter rotation speeds and whatnot for the perfectionists out there who want the ultimate performance and sound out of their turntables Vinyl Engine | The Home of the Turntable

lots of people I have talked with about this have reccomended the Sure's...thy're obv a good benchmarkto go by and the best all-rounder to get, I might try a bigger cartridge next time rather than replacing the tips on my Ortofons...after balancing and adjusting the weight a bit more...I am still getting a bit of bounce and the needle aint always on the record.
