I`m gonna have a moan now, just to see if its just me that thinks like this.
OK DJ/Producer, been DJ`n on and off for years. I tried to do the `upfront` DJ thing for a bit and it was just so `blahhhhhhh` specially with MP3`s and tracks been `hot` for like 1 day and then summert else been out. at least with vinyl it took a few months to be so last `meal time`. But thats not mi moan. I went from DJ`n new music to DJ`n old skool because i allways used to drop classix into my sets,as time went on all i got asked for was old skool. I`d play an £8:99 brand new buy and get no reaction, play a piano anthem and the place went mad (PS the anthem might of cost £2 offa Ebay, and most of them i had from DJ`n way back). I still go to the odd night thats doing the new thing, but all i see is a DJ playing CDR`s to a room of 20 other DJ`s who stand around nodding because the DJ knows his stuff. This track was number one in the download chart at dinner time and he`s playing it ! now if it was number one at breakfast time they`d all be shaking their heads in disgust. My point is DJ`s playing now a days seem to have forgotten they are ment to be playing to a crowd, they are ment to be `throwing a party`,they are ment to be making people dance and enjoy themselves. the soulfull funky scene is the worst, its seems to be so stuck up music snobbery, now i`m not saying all these DJ`s are but on the whole thats what it seems like AND more and more soulful/funky clubs are shutting down. I know the internet and technology aint done the dance scene any favours, but if DJ`s put the party back into clubbing, then they clubs might fill up. DJ to people not to get recognition from other DJ`s..............................
There Rant over, i feel better now !!!!!!! hahahahaha !!!!!!
PS: apolojiz for the bad spolling and the scruffy handwriting !

There are Producers making Oldskool Breakbeat {Hardcore} which i think is interesting so why don't you make some oldschool because TBH i can't stand any music right now to me nothing has it's true meaning anymore it is the same formular all the time,i like new school breaks tho Plump DJ's etc.I'am a Producer myself starting my own record label soon and my website is getting built,i am am making Trance,Hard style {not the typical type} and new school breaks but i am gona help out with this new hardcore what is trying to come back so give it a go yourself mate, like i said music suks for me right now i only buy old school vinyl now there is nothing for me to buy, think of it like this the new generation did not go throught it all so it would be nice for them so experience it...

Dam i even use to like some chart music and chart music is so horrible now,i will be there eating my dinner watching a bit of TV an advert will come with a singer singing something like "a punk rocker with flowers in my hair" now what the hell is that all about eeeeeeewwwwwww go away!!!

Ive just recently got back into playing new music after a 10 year break. Some of the new music that is about doesnt rely on speed for energy and its actually got some passion and melody behind it. Not quiet sure what pigeon hole to put it into but loving the booka shade stuff. Plus Im only still playing vinyl, cant see me moving to mp3's - just doesnt seem right. All this after a night in a converted toilet in London - and various plays of new stuff from other dj's.

new old old new

i`ve made a few old style tracks in a new way and loved it ! did`nt know there was a market for it, was just messing and having a go at the bland`ness of now.
Strange thing is we put this old skool night on and if ---IF !!!! summert comes out i like, i buy it and drop and new track into an old skool set !!! hahahahahaha how many DJ`s do it the other way round !!!! makes me chuckle...
bookashade ? aint heard none of this !!!! see maybe i`m just flicking the wrong pages eh ? all my mates (producers and DJ`s) are soulful/funky jocks and i don`t get the time to listen to Pete tong or anyone who sorta gives you a wider spectrum. Me and a mate was on about doing old skool tracks, you know old skool broken beat stuff as we said it was a time that could be forgot for the more main stream "classix"....
Glad i mentioned it now, given me new hope !!! cheers people !!!!

There has always/always will be, great new music being made, you're just not hearing it.

When the whole house music thing exploded the first time round, it was all fresh and exciting, and I'd say at least 90% of what was coming out was decent, only 10% crap, so you had loads of great music to buy (I think everyone probably regrets not buying more of it - as we're still buying it now lol) As years went on and it changed, jungle techno > breatbeat > mid 90's fragmented styles inc speed garage etc, there was still great music being made then, I'd gone in a different direction with the German tracks that were being made and a lot of the stuff on Warp records, electronica stuff was class, which continued through into the noughties.

Good to see Booka Shade getting mentioned, they've done some ace stuff, minimal music, warm with melodies and as Dreamgirl said, they aren't reliant on speed, which is ace imo, going back to the 120bpm tempo is a good thing, there's so many great producers/artists around at the moment, Lindstrom, Trentmoller, Sander Kleinenberg, Luke Vibert, The Knife to name a few.

It is harder to hear the good stuff thesedays with so much rubbish music being made, as thesedays it's often PC based music that is created, so pretty much anyone with a fairly good spec'd PC and pirated music software like reason, acid, fruityloops etc can knock out some tracks.

I'd recommend going to new nights and hearing what other DJ's are playing nowadays, old skool nights are good, but new stuff makes a nice change too :)

Hear hear Jammer

Love the point about cheap sounding tunes... it's exactly why hardcore went shiiiiite imo 92/3... too many cheap & nasty sounding tunes that sounded like they were recorded in someone's bedroom / crack den & relied on cheesey samples & bpm :naughty: Exceptions being Basement tunes which were always classy...

There is some AMAZING new music being created today - sites like Juno really help as you can listen to snippets of all tunes on the site & also if you like a tune you see what other tunes people who bought that one have also bought... I could spend all day on there :D

Agreedamoondo, but I take the originateror's point too...

Sadly a LOT of what goes on with dance music is driven by trends (as Shooms said... when 'ardcore became shiiiiite). Everyone in the scene competing for kudos & trying to be more "on it" than everyone else with the latest this that n t'other... The fact that the time taken to get a track from yer heed to worldwide distribution on the electroweb has reduced to practically zero has definitely contributed to this...

But just as there are spackers who turn their noses up at tunes more than five minutes old, there are similar spackers in every field of interest. Go along to an old-car show if you don't believe me... fook me... blokes in stripey baseball caps talking XR3i chassis numbers with similar blokes and laughing at the geezer who hasn't got original Ford dustcaps on all four wheels...

Every field of interest has it's trainspotters, but for me it always was and always will be about loving the music and loving the peeps who love the music. A tune's a tune whether it was recorded yesterday or 200 years ago.

Right... i'm off to download Scooter's version of Moonlight Sonata before any fucker else gets it...

more beef !

Another thing that gets me, When it all kicked off at first people would travel 100`s of miles to hear what was going on, because it was all fresh and new. i agree with the above, the genre thing really cocked stuff up, for me (and thats just personal) i liked it better when it was all one genre ,when it was just house, DJ`s could take you on a proper journey, instead of 2 hours of the same stuff. (again i`m not saying all DJ`s) i think the only way to get that one united crowd out to clubs is for something new to happen with house. People only seem to go out to look good or to drink a bit longer, none of which mattered before. They need to be going out purely for the music. What could this new thing be ???? it can`t just be a new genre as we`ve had that like we`ve just said. I think the VJ thing try`d to be the next big thing but did`nt pull it off. Also it feels like something is about to happen, like its been plodding along waiting for it. there seems to be a generation gap of people that just don`t get clubbing, if something could happen to get them as inthusiastic as we was it`d be great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
all this has probably been said a thousands times on ere i bet !!!!! but it seems a good place to get it off my chest !

Very true words- There's basically good & bad music, irrespective of genre. Genres seem to create many more problems than they are worth. We generally learn to both love & hate genres & overlook, I'm sure, many a good tune just due to negative perceptions (apart from hardhouse, which is wank :) )
I think the tendency to just stick to old skool can be very limiting, music has to advance and I know that it's easy to say that strings ain't what they used to be, but the fact is that if you listen to the right producers, then they are
still developing things. BJ mentions Luke Vibert can produced the most lush, bass-driven house that you've ever heard (Kerrier district) & the most mental jungle (Amen Andrews).
There is loads of crap out there, but there again there are loads of peeps who don't get enough props. Dig deeper until you find something you like.
