Totally agree. Bullshit and hypocrisy of the top order. "Notwithstanding that these are the best figures we've ever had, we know that we can do more and that we can reduce the numbers of people being killed and seriously injured and that means looking at speeding, drink driving, drug driving, careless driving and people not wearing seatbelts." I can see they plan to look at speeding & drink/drug-driving in those plans, but what about the others?? You can't seriously tell me that the doddery awld gannies who can't fucking see past the dashboard, and potter around near where I live in their Metros (vanden plas tho mind... picnic tables in the back seats) or Rover 200s are less of a hazard and a danger to life than someone doing 90 up the motorway. Or clawhammer wielding Czechoslovakian lorry drivers wired to fuck on Pro-Plus & Red Bull (and god knows what else) who've been on the go for 36 hours and are wandering between lanes all ower the gaff... It's absolute bollocks. If you want to promote road safety... 1) Spend money on road improvements, not just more signs and cameras... better lighting... markings... widening... clearing verges... 2) Compulsory driving test every 5 years once you get to 50, and every 2 years from 65 onwards 3) Ban scooters & 125cc bikes altogether. 250 cc minimum. Also ban L plate bikers & CBT & force everyone who wants to ride a bike to do a full test. 4) Minimum speed limits on motorways (except in the left hand lane). 5) More police patrols. 6) Compulsory road safety education in schools for kids. They won't of course bring in any of the above measures, because they'd cost too much and/or be too unpopular with voters. Much easier to just do what they always do... more speed = more danger & lower the drink driving limit... Not saying I'm against either of those things, just that they are completely missing the point IMO... But it'll win them votes (from the above Metro-driving old grannies & the Daily Mail brigade) and it'll cost them next to nowt to introduce, and it'll pay for itself in extra speeding tickets & higher fines. What annoys me most is they think we are so stupid we don't see it.
