About a month ago i was at an 18th birthday, and they had all this music on and all, one of the guys asked me if i liked this kind of thing and i replied "yes but the older stuff", and they all replied r u oldskool. :) :)

As far as u guys goe then I no nothing but i was there, when it came from underground to the top.

Get to the point Jo (ok)

What r the young ones like in your area, I do not mean anything by been young as I notice we have a few on the board but how did you get in to this era of music if u weren't there.

Been nosey again soz

Ok Im an old fart (pushing 30, lol), I reckon its like all kinds of music. In the mid 60's only a few mad heads listened ti the beatles BUT by 1970 they were on the front cover of rolling stone magazine and consequently every tom dick n harry was listening to them (still are a lot of people).

So basically its "pop" music of the new millenium innit.

That doesnt change the fact that "we" who lived its uprising didnt just fall in love with the music but the whole underworldy lifestyle and all that went with it.

Wow, youre on form tonite PW!. Good question........

I dont count a being a young pup at 24 do I???. Well Ill tell you anyway. Its a long story so pull up a chair and make yerself at 'ome..........

Being braught up in a relatively musically viod household (par BeeGees/The Great Roy Orbison/Elvis/Carpenters- you get the picture) and my mates at the time were all into that quite dire late 80's rock pop mushy tripe, I didnt feel that I fitted in any of these musical styles. Late eighties when I was still at junior skool (!) I found I was into rap music and american hiphouse mainstream stuff and dare I say it NWA, ICE T hardcore gangsta rap etc.
I soon realised that it was the background elements of this stuff which were driving things for me, so I subconciously drifted to less and less rap and more and more dance/rap/hiphouse stuff (if u know what I mean) and even indie dance cross overs like Jesus Jones, The Farm etc and believe it or not TechnoTronic type stuff etc!!!
Then one fateful day, I heard some "underground" dance music early 90's and it just took my breath away!. Awesome. This was the stuff for me! :). Never looked back since.
I had a tough time at school 'cos folk were asking what music I was into and nobody really listened to dance music back then around my area, also I was too young by far to be gadding off to Hacienda or even my local Angels for at least a couple of years but the music just took over my life and beautifull electronic music was all that was important..........
Its just a musical journey so far(not necessarily in order), Rap,hiphouse, indie dance, dance, hardcore, breakbeat, italian, happyhardcore, house, epic house, trance, goa etc etc all weaved in and out.

So, I cant really comment on the original 'rave' party atmosphere because I wasnt bleedin' old enough!!!, but my life would certainly be void without it!.

So there you have it, my life story of how I got into 'Old Skool' summed up in one post. I too was there all along, but waiting in the backround.

You may remove those matchsticks and un-sellotape your eyes open now, heheheh. Get a coffee quick before you doze off again :).

See ya,

Sirius.

Seeing how theres now a shed load of posts whilst I was writing this :), I must give my old fuddyduddy view that this 'new' stuff you get bombarded with is a right pile of soul-less w*ank. It makes me despair to be associated with that when you say to someone your into dance music. Ill tell you sommet else whilst Im at it old man styleeee - It gives me bloody headache when you spend an afternoon in a record shop which has tons of 15/16 y.o wanna be djs ploughing through 50 tons of 'hard house' in half an hour one after the other. AAArrGGHHH!. Right, Old man has left the building..........its safe to come out now.

well......

i rekon the word old skool means summet diffrent to everyone - to the southerners its what i call old skool hardcore ie 2 bad mice etc etc and to the northeners its more the plinky plonky piano stuff. me n peeps in my area call it old skool mainly coz a lot of us went n still go to the back to the old skool nights at maximes so gary h's fault all this confusion!! (j/k fella)

i got into it not til about 98 before then i had 1 tape which was nipper - bowlers 94 coz i nicked it off r kid n i had never heard so many wild tunes on 1 tape n it was shitloads better than what i was listenin 2 at the time (paul van dyk etc etc) so i went to maximes once late 98 n was converted for life. 2 months after said conversion i started the site mainly coz i was lookin on the net once for young mc n nowhere had it n i was a tad pissed at the time n thought fuk it il make one. so 24 hours later and a hangover n half the site was made, it had about 10 tunes on it at first n i didnt know the name of them apart from young n asha. it was called old skool alley at first.

im got into it coz the tunes were way better than n e thin at the time n as ive found out more pearlers there aint nothin i dont think that ever will b like em.

Hey pacman - Dont mention shed loads of often quite fuzzy Stu Allan Key 103 radio show tapes around here!!!. I got myself an absolutely F-OFF massive arial on my roof to pick that bugger up in 1993 (I live over 50 miles away!!!) and still have hundreds of tapes of bits of stuff. Really, its quite insane amount!.
No, seriously, i dont know what to do with all this stuff - I may just store it somewhere 'cos it would take years to sort out and record the decent stuff off them all and the tape mountain gets me down sometimes. Some of the crappier fuzzy ones have since made way for the 'essential mix' etc and its either I sort 'em all out gradually or just put the whole bleedin lot in the bin. Are you in the same boat? nah probably not!.

well how did it all start for me??

wen i was about 15 i managed to get a club 4 tape(half a tape) and was amazed by it...all me mates thought i was insane but i couldn't stop listening to it until it eventually worn out

i managed to scav tapes from people and was hooked

i never went to bowlers or any of the clubs i should have(big mistake) did get to maximes a couple of times in 95/96 but never stopped listening to it.

i think the younger people nowadays get into it through there brother or sisters(maybe) there r a few of them that just have a good ear for the music:) :) :)

by the way i'm 25...and did any1 ever go to CLub 4????

ps wot a question:D

I think I joined the whole house music thing back at school in 86, I was well into Chicargo house, and still burn a long lasting flame for it now

88 Moved into the Acid music thing, I was 17 at the time, being rebelius to anyone and everyone at the time. I use to get cladded up in me smilie culture T-shirt and bandana, ansd a pair of skate rags. Use to be well into the skatebording thing at the time and thought I was it ( WHY !!! )

89 at the age of 18, I really started to get into the clubing thing and was mostly into Hip-Hop ( NWA, P Enemy ect.. ) and also the funky dread soul to soul sound, cladded in troop tracksuits, LA Raider gear and African freedom badges swinging from my neck. It wasabout this time that I got really interested in the whole DJ thing, started doing nights at Sugar shack, GG barnams in York with the likes of Mongoose & Buzzbie

90 The clubing really tuck off for me and started Dj ing on a pirate station in York called KLFM ( Later to become Power FM ) this opend up lots of Dj-ing work in Leeds, Derby ( Dial & Lo ) and Nottigham ( Zest ) music was still very hip- house at the time and apart from people like Fast Eddie & Young Mc, this was the first stylee of house music I was not to keen on

91- 92 What can I say appart from what a time to be 21, life was real good, music was at its peak, and the feeling was like beeing on top of the world. I gave up working in the day time and just DJ'd and partyed for a wholoe year, I mean how could you miss life at that stage in dance musics history and at that age too ?. You know how people say "If you could be around in any era, what would it be ?" and people say shite like " I would have love to have been around the 60s " well to these people I say GET A LIFE !, if you wanted to live in some other era, then you cant have made the most off the one you lived through. I loved 92, and would not swap it for the world

93 I setteld down, dance music got tinnie, and very poppie in its culture, All that was left then was memories of a happy youth,

AND A DAM GOODTIME !!!!

Long live da Old Skool and the memories
