i was wondering what people thought of the "new" music of late called nu skool breaks.......basically it's an oldskool tune revamped in a breaks style(or if you are as old as me lol..... a big beat style).
personally i don't like this music especially after hearing one of my favourite tracks..... reese and santonio - rock to the beat being pulverised.
i don't think there is anything wrong with sampling music from the past as long as the sample is used intelligently and made into something new and not just an old tune with a different beat behind it.
anyway that's just my opinion , someone who has been listening to house, techno from the beginning......... will be interesting to hear the views of everyone ...... love it or hate it , its here :)

p.s. this is a nice musical discussion....... so be nice and keep your CAPS LOCK in it's holster ;)

Awful. Not a big fan of breaks at the best of times but this takes the p*ss if you ask me. Just got back from a few days in London and a mate's girlfriend has suddenly decided to be a DJ. She told me this was her 'flava'! It was difficult to take her seriously - I managed early on but after hearing about 10 familiar piano riffs it started to sound like a megamix medley, totally devoid of any creativity. After a few beers I couldn't resist a few choice comments which resulted in everyone being cross with me.

"Always originate, never pirate...." ;)

Not for me, no no no.... I'm a snob really & I prefer my tunes pure n unadultered.... don't matter if it's nu skool breaks or the 'pumpin' fad from 95ish... leave my tunes alone lol

There are a couple of classics that have been recently re-interpreted with respect & love mind.... couple that spring to mind are:

Full Intention mix of "Tears"
Now Voyager mix of "You got the love"

dunno why lol but there are tunes from back then which were ripoffs themselves (ie. tainted cash, love rock boot, now thats what I call a bootleg etc etc etc & everytune that nicked the piano from Sterling Void - Don't wanna go lol) but these are special to me.... which makes me think that nu skool breaks today are as relevant for the 'new' crowd just getting into their music as the real tunes were for me back then.... still think that they ought to be educating themselves more mind :drevil:

Bottom line - be creative & be respectful to the the originals

It wouldn't be as bad if they were more creative with sampling sounds from the originals, but the ones I've heard, they've just taken a big loop, so you've heard something come in, and aren't sure, like the Leftfield one - Not Forgotten, I heard that out recently and was dead excited at hearing it, but then this breakbeat came in over the top and totally squashed the main loop they had sampled, making it hard to hear the main bit of the track. I just thought it was pointless after that happened.

I've heard a few that have been ok, and where instead of just sampling huge loops and looping them, they've been a bit more creative like - Prodigy - Everybody In The Place springs to mind for being quite good...

Shooms:

"I'm a snob really & I prefer my tunes pure n unadultered"

:) I'm the same, even with acapellas (apart from the odd few) :p

Nu Breakz has become the new Scouse House IMO.

Why they are taking every old tune and remixing it in a breakz style is beyond me - that it sells records I suppose :S From a musical point of view though it's just plain wrong.

It's a shame as well because I've always really liked the breakbeat genre or like Grover says Big Beat (or Uk Breaks or Chemical Breaks!). Labels like Mob, Marine Parade, and Bolshi have been producing decent "breaks" for about 10 years now. Hybrid have produced consistently decent stuff for about the same time.

So why now has the genre been hijacked and just become people's "flava", with these crazy remixes turning up?

On the one hand i have to admit a lot of 'nu skool breaks' sound superb, and are great to hear out ..... but when i refer to nu skool breaks i mean the stuff you will hear @ clubs like 'urban gorilla, sheffield', 'technique, leeds', 'fabric, london' etc etc ..... anything made by producers like unkle, adam freeland, hybrid, and played out by the likes of james zabiela is as good as anything out there .... if you havent tried it yet then do, cause there is a lot of good stuff your missing out on ..... adam freelands essential mix is excellent, as is zabielas ....

on the other hand, i'm not one for slab after slab of oldskool copies coz that aint what breaks were invented for ..... people like danny mcmillan, meat katie & freeland have been pushing this style for years only for a few booty labels to simply knick the bassline and whack over a few well known samples, pianos, synths etc .... dont know where you hear copy after copy of this stuff being played out coz i know none of the big/respected clubs would ever let it happen, simply because it would get so tedious ..... admitally there is the odd remix which has been well done, ive got a fair few i have to admit but would only drop the odd one to get a reaction so to speak .... the breaks mixes of cj bollonds - la carmaque, blurs - song 2 (which would erupt any club) and bjorks - joga are blinding imo

so i wouldnt go shunting out new skool breaks all together because youve heard a few rip-offs .... theres loadsa good shit out there that you will probs find you like! evil 9's album is pretty tasty too ....

Breaks was innovative at first but like all musical trends it lost direction as soon as the breaks remakes of classic tunes started to surface.
Just waiting to hear the nu-acid version of where love lives then its time to move on again.
The Germans are making really good music at the moment and pushing the boundaries so we can only blame the English when the cash-ins arrive.

Never likes that Breaks & Big Beat Shit much. Especially Fatboy Slim is one of the worsest artists ever. Its the type of english music I dont like and thankfully nobody plays that kind of stuff in germany.

Unusually, Im on the other side for a change.

Ive not heard too many tunes, probably about 15 tracks thats been revamped with phat breaks.......CNM type stuff, and some of them I think are done quite well. Others just take the piss though, I agree.

Some of them have been carefully crafted, lovingly updated, and ones I feel are as such, I like.

hmm

I have to listen to a lot of this stuff cause a mate of mine runs a website called ibreaks.com and cause of my friends who play this kind of stuff at fabric in london. I have heard some shocking ones.

They've done ebenezer goode etc. A good one I heard was prodigy's outer space.

I feel I have to add that not all new skool breaks rip off old skool tunes. But as far as I'm concerned this music has no soul and there are very few girls into it. Hence it has a pretty geeky customer base

i've done some sets recently that even though they werent all breakz tunes the vast majority of em were and i'm always on the look out for new decent quality breakz relicks - though there is alot of shit out there too.....

one place i played it was upstairs at hazy on nye and it seemed to go down well, another place was at goodtimes once in dec and once in jan and even though good times is known as a happy anthems place, the breakz went down pretty well imo which would surprise some. tbh most of the tunes sound alot better on a big system and most folk who would spew at the mention of breakz end up gettin down to it. the short set i did at font was all breakz and also seemed to do the trick.....???

i've always played harder stuff as a rule so perhaps its easier for me to get into breakz after my 91-92 hardcore / breakbeat days but i've got a couple of sets comin up in the next few weeks and i'll more then likely be chuckin some of them in and will probably carry on until i clear the dancefloor or someone physically attacks me over it lol......

my input then - 'i like em'......

On Cloud 9!!!
Nah not for me either im afraid........maybe the odd one will appeal but on the whole im an original kinda chick...never too keen on remixes either...have to be very good imo to get the  on the original!!!!

Its a shame that artists today have to MORPH the old to create the new!!! this is what is lacking at the mo......ability to foresee the future of music and develope new sounds without steeling what has already been!!! ;) im not saying all artist are doin this...just a generalistc opinion on a generation of sound!!!

While i agree with the negative comments about the breaks scene im gonna go on the side of supporting it lol.
Reason being i see it as the new 'hardcore'. I went to a festival called the Glade in the summer of last year and they were hosting a tent soley for breakz. Every breakz dj imginable played there over the three days and i must say i fukkin loved it. Yes there are loads of rip offs but to the older crew they are done very tongue in cheek, to the new kids they often have the same effect that they did when we first heard the originals years ago. The thing that clinched it for me was when a sat back and watched the way that the crowd were reacting to the music, it reminded me of an old school rave. this is the first time in ages that there has been a soundtrack that crosses genres and appeals to the youth. Id much rather it than R+B as people get there heads down and dance to this stuff for the right reasons, it rocks the joint. As for no girls well ive been to many and never seen a shortage of women there;)
Although i agree with Grover about the way that it kills some good tunes i would also add that there are some killer new tunes/djs out there to be heard also. I think we should embrace any new music that is keepin the ethos of what it was all about alive rather than go down the road that many prog heads have and make it boring and no fun.

It's all house music to me. I say balls to tagging. Any "new" style is likely to have been dreamed up by some f**kers at Mixmag or some other bit of nonsense trying to be cool.

aye the glade festival is fantastic for breaks ..... a lot of the tents will play at least some breaks there. deffo wanna try and get myself down this year, but it books out so fast that place .....

theres nothing wrong with droppin sumet a bit different, love laurent garniers extended sets as much as anything out there simply because he'll play anything from jazz and drum'n'bass, to techno and rock .... its all good at the end of the day

breaks as a genre does the trick for a second room (as well as first) in many different styles of clubs ..... were off to a d'n'b night for my mates b'day do next fri (hype, andy c etc), and breaks is the style for the second room with 'hyper' (quality  ) and 'nowt but breaks' etc ...... the d'n'b heads love it, as do a lot of the hardcore crew .... sankeys in manc have it in the second room regularly with airtight and their ressie iain taylor hosting it .... the odd bit of its deffinately good for sumet a bit different from the norm .... didnt see 50,000 people complaining when hybrid dropped their mix of prodigys - smack my bitch up @ dance valley last year;) hehe. the whole hill was rockin:thumbsup:
