its not as if breaks have just appeared thou, theyve been around years .... the booty companys only cottoned onto to summet fairy recently ..... take papai neu guinea, an absolute oldskool classic - hybrid did a class breaks remix of that way back in 2000/2001 which hasnt been played to deaf at all, it was another 2 years at least till the oldskool tracks started getting 'breakz'd up for the masses ....

hybrid have been producing class progressive breaks for the past ten years, got a mix on now from 2002 and heres clips of the first two tracks, both wicked tracks, the likes you dont really hear enough of .... but thats deffo a good thing coz it keeps good understanding crowds at the smaller clubs where people like them play .... when someone like meat katie, zabiela, hybrid, freeland play at somewhere like urban gorilla (breaks nite), sheffield they are worshipped and your guarenteed a good a night as anywhere ....

Agree totally with danny here hybrid are 1 of my fav artists the album remix and additional production by is a quality mix album also the essential mix of theres that i have is sh*thot. Also really like RITM stuff there live mixes being absolutly mind blowing :fekked: :fekked: phones: phones:
if i was out in a club and i heard nu-skool breaks remixes of oldskool tunes 1 after the other then yeah i would prob get well pissed of with it but i think hearing the occasional tune with an oldskool theme would be good.

Definately. You just need to listen to what was being played at the Hacienda in the late 80's and the old skool nights there. It was predominately house music but anything could get dropped at anytime from hip hop, soul or electro to screaming italian piano stormers and US house.

I remember hearing 45 king - 900 number in there and the place went absolutely bezerk. The Dj kept slowing the tune right down to a standstill then speeding it right up, whilst chopping it up with another copy. Although, It probably would have sounded a right mess if it was taped, LOL :D

This is what I don't understand about clubbing today..

Pigeonholing (is that a word?) is restrictive. Why not play anything as long as its good (of course this is subjective...). If a "Breaks" Remix is top notch, why cant it go alongside a Deep House tune that rocks..?

Or are DJs too concerned with mixing?.., or are people too narrow minded to hear different house in one set?

As for Breaks, loved the RITM stuff, but thats was years ago..:$

Bit off topic, sorry...

Im buying lately what is a blend between breaks and progressive. I would have no qualms about doing a prog mix, then as it rolls along spice up with a few breakbeats, then wander off with some full on breakz that carry the vibe then roll back into a bit of prog again.

I really havent a clue what DJ's sets are like now, I havent been to proper club land for over 6 years. :|

Think that is what i like about it all is that it emcompasses many styles as hardcore did in its infancy.Back then youd hear Belgium techno,American House and British breakbeat trax alongside each other. Weatherall to The Stanton Warriors love it
As for the debate on the bootys, just watchin an episode of the Simpsons and this made me laff at its relevance lol

What you have to remember is how massive this dance music scene is and how easy nowadays it is to produce something that is actually not very good. It takes a couple of hours to knock something together. You also have to remember that because of the scale of the dance scene in general that you are always going to get shite records. To be truthful you always have. There were some complete nuggets on Trax and as for those Italians… We have also always had people sampling from the past. Sometimes in a good and innovative way, sometimes in a poor cheesy and uninspiring way. It is easy for us to look back at our past and say how these records sampling ‘rock to the beat’ and such like are no good. Maybe to us they are not. Maybe they are introducing to a new sound to these new kids getting into dance via the nu skool route just as Oasis may have got some 14 year olds to listen to the Beatles. That in my opinion ain’t no bad thing. Sampling from the past has been with us for years and will be for ever more. There are classic house records that we all think of as being genuine works of genius – Frankie Knuckles ‘Your Love’ for example it samples the whole of it’s bassline from Electra ‘Feels Good’ on Emergency. I bet when it Your Love came out there were people jumping up and down screaming blue murder at Knuckles for fucking with their music.

We are all allowed our opinions and everyone is completely right. Some of the comments on this thread are very interesting. Personally I have come round to liking breaks again after going off it completely toward the end of the 90’s. As a rhythm it potentially offers much more than a straight 4/4 but so often it’s use is poor. As for sampling old classics – when done well and in an interesting way it is fine but to cover up a weak track from someone with no ability to write their own melody or lyric it’s pants…
