Back in the day, i never liked hardcore. It was far too fast, chipmunk vocals, and just generally irritating. And yet over the last few years i've come to realise that i actually love a lot of the stuff that was getting put out in the early 90's. So much so that i've spent a fair few quid on some of my most wanted tracks (Orcas Dances with Dolphins EP#2 and Neuromancers Pennywise, to name a couple).

The thing is, i've finally realised that so many DJ's were playing these tunes speeded up that i never got the chance to appreciate this music as it truly was. I still get irritated hearing old mixes playing great hardcore tunes at +6 when they sound great at their normal speed or (sacrilege) even slower. I've even play Darkman's Strings of Darkness at a hideously slow speed, which for me makes a fantastic house/breaks tune, in a mix i did a while back.

So what's your opinion? The faster the better? I can't be the only one that appreciates hardcore not running at 1 million miles an hour

i'm feelin' what you're saying the spaceface. Many tracks not just hardcore ones from years ago sound shit e when played anything above +2% on yer Technics. This is because anything above that changes the key and as most hardcore tunes had a few different keys in them because they were thrown together sorta fucked em up even more. Maybe im just a fussy Caaaaaaant hahahaha, but you get the gist of what im saying.

Used to be an attitude thing here in the SE! The harder and fast the set the better in many peoples eyes, this still applies today. A lot of the mainstream hardcore tracks, moving shadow etc get massively overplayed Ratpack stylie however some of the best tracks are the underground small label releases. I would also say the best year of the genre is 1991 or 1990 when the sound was new and exciting releases were coming out. 1992 onwards, money took over and many records sound the same.......some are very good but too many acen like releases.

Welcome back everybody btw

The thing with not having been into hardcore back in the day is that i really have no idea what are regarded as anthems, or overplayed and boring. Well, apart from the crossover stuff that got played by everyone. I went from italo & bleepy down the prog house route. That must still be an influence since i still prefer hardcore tracks with floaty (ie Pennywise) or piano (ie Orca) elements, but at the moment i dont really have any prejudices for any tracks yet. Well, apart from chipmonk vocals, i dont really get how anyone can be into that...

Anyway, its pretty annoying cause of all genres from back in the day, so many of the really good hardcore vinyls cost a bloody fortune now. I wish i'd appreciated them 20 years ago!

Completely agree with all this. There were some great hardcore tunes but only played slower.

Not a fan of chipmunk vocals either or anything else unduly silly

Some nice tunes in that list there monty, and plenty i'd never heard of before. I'm not quite sure where you're trying to take us on the doctor who/popcorn tip though!!!

I love the REAL first real moments in music The Doctor Who music (1963) just blows me away it is overlooked (space music) with what that lady did using synthesizers (RIP),i am just passionate about British music how trippy & psychedelic we are & just having a bit of fun thats all.

Peeps post about USA & Italio music i like to post about British music (not doing no harm) thats were i come from & thats what i love,i like to hear what the producers can actually do with sounds there capabilities there limits how open minded they are,you can really feel how open minded they are in there music & enjoying music from a sound engineering point of view its whole different BUZZ all together, but golden rule of music is for fun! or should be.

I just like to have a waffle about it lol its all done with joy! i love it all  you got to make an effort if you want to hear other things in music.

But like you said tho Hardcore is so expensive i wish they would bring the prices down i bet some of them will never sell.
