Just wondering why a good number of my Discomagic records have OUT catalog numbers on them scribed out and a DMX cat# in place of it?

I heard something along the lines of a lot of Discomagic being bootys, can anyone shed any light :)

Biskit knows the full yarn - sure there is an old thread about this on here.

Copied this from ogs:

Disco Magic UK
Profile:
UK Based division of the Italian Discomagic label.
Some of the records containing the DISK / DMGX / DMX are represses of the original Italian releases. If the original etching has been scratched out on either the A-side or B-side of the vinyl, then the record is a repress.
With the exception of DMX 020, the A-side, both tracks are original recordings for that year 1993 and not a repress. The B-side is a repress of the original Italian release on Italy Out Records

Correct - and all of them were labelled as promos.

I reckon Discomagic UK was set up to cash in on the demand for the italian releases and because Discomagic Italy was in a financial mess. They owed royalties for samples used and SIAE were after them big style. Of course the owner was subsequently charged for trying to sell bootleg CDs in the USA. I also know somebody who knows Severoni Lomdardoni very well and apparently he is not a very nice person.

Discogmagic surely has the biggest and best catalogue of italian house so we have a lot to thank him for, despite him being a crook.

alfredo was Ibizan wasn't he??

why UK discomagic

why not? it was still discomagic, but in the uk, to avoid the peeps severo was in trouble with, no stamp, no trouble.

thats like sayin why did electric choc release stuff on discomagic uk.

its still discomagic, all the original plates where used, and then the orig cat's scratched out and the DM cat scribed back on em all.

DMWX are the original releases for that year, they wont have a cat scratched out. the rest are represses, except for a few b-sides.

i could be here all day with this topic, but its late lol

I will explain that to put that little SIAE stamp on a record costs money and is a legal requirement in Italy.

The fee can be claimed back on unsold stock as long as the records are destroyed. This is one of reasons why companies have not got shedloads of unsold stock lying around - they destroyed them to reclaim the fee.

I am reliably informed that indeed he did not destroy the stock and also he managed a major clearout of the Discomagic warehouse shortly before they went bust.

I also believe, to the best of my knowledge, and a little bit of assumption here I must add, that around this time he was a very close friend of the original owner of ZYX (who is now dead) - probably through ZYX licensing so many titles from Discomagic - and he gave them the rights to the Discomagic back catalogue. I reckon money will have changed hands but I bet it was in a brown envelope, if you get my drift.

It took years of investigation to find a lot of this information out and lots of negotiation between ZYX and myself to agree to license the Discomagic back catalogue.
