Why o why is it every time I build a PC for someone or upgrade the OS the only bloody device that never seems to be found by windows XP is a dial up modem. Even with SP2 loaded the OS doesn't have a generic driver to get the device working or doesn't want to know.
All I get in control panel is "Simple PCI communications device" with the little yellow question mark.

Is there a trick to force a generic driver to run a modem, if so which one do you recommend?

I dont want to have to keep installing sisoft sandra on these bar stewards all the time to find out the make/model of modem if poss.

I bet theres a piss simple solution to this...

Thanks again in advance,

Andy

In a world of my own
windows has only drivers for certian hardware and not a lot of it either, although saying that, when i rebuilt, it had all me drivers for network cards ect, only thing I can think of is D/L drivers before you rebuild, but lets face it, if someones on a dial up modem, do you really want to give them access to the world wide web ? :p

Tell um to get DSL or fuck off :p lol

There is a standard modem device driver for a 56k dial modem in xp - I dont know whether this will work with any modem though.... may be enough just to get you connected whilst you get the correct drivers.... Im assuming you dont have the manufactures disk to install the proper drivers for the modem.
