Just in case anyone else wants to do it. Here's another pic to describe it.
Get the elevator to the 86th floor. Go up another floor to either Petronas presidents office or the Malaysian PMs office depending which tower you are in. Up another floor to the cleaning gantry, as you can see here.
Climb up some more internal steps to the just above the globe structure. Open the door and climb the rungs a couple of hundred feet
PS don't look down

I'm more stupid than brave
It was a once in a lifetime opportunity that presented itself to me. And I knew it could never be beaten. Apparently a Japanese guy went up soon after with safety gear and managed to haul himself up, on top of the final dome, that sits on top of the spire. And there had already been a group of canadians that went up and clipped on to a ring just below the top globe. And absieled down.
One thing I regret not doing was getting someone below to take a picture of me pulling a

So just out of curiosity I thought I'ld go up further. There's an internal ladder within the spire that goes about half way up, leading to a porthole - but it was welded shut So I had to clamber back down to a door above the globe. When I opened that, the little "dare you" voices took over in my head.

I was allowed up - but it was a "bit" naughty of me to wander off. You would have to know someone who worked there to get up there, whilst it was being built. You'ld have no chance now as its biometric access; retina scan - as seen in the film Entrapment.
