Biog:
DJ Woody is one of Britains most respected hip hop dj's and arguably one of the
most innovative and musical turntablists of his generation. Driven by an
obsessive quest for originality in the true spirit of hip hop culture, Woody is
a one-man movement constantly pushing the envelope in a time when most dj's seem
content with covering old ground. Responsible for the invention of a host of
groundbreaking scratches, beatjuggle and turntablist techniques including his
famous signature 'Woodpecker' scratch, not many DJ's can lay claim to having had
scratch legend DJ Qbert on the telephone asking for tips. Not surprising then
that turntable giants Vestax were quick to take up some of Woody's ideas for
their new revolutionary 'Controller One' turntable, the worlds first ever
turntable to play full musical scales. Woody's background doesn't quite fit in
with media driven stereotypes of a hip hop artist, hailing from the grimey
northern industrial town of Burnley in England it is perhaps
this unlikely setting that aided Woody's maverick style. Most of the 90's were
spent perfecting his skills by rocking clubs, performing with MC's, vocalists
and live bands, producing mixtapes and laying down cuts in the studio. In 1999
Woody entered his first dj competition making it straight through to the UK DMC
finals, from this Woody's success on the battle circuit snowballed and in 2001
Woody was to become the worlds most successful scratch dj by gaining more major
championship titles than any of his contemparies. On taking a trip to the mecca
of turntablism, San Francisco, Woody made history by becoming the first ever
European to take the coveted World ITF title (International Turntablist
Federation), following in the footsteps of legendary dj's Babu (Dilated Peoples)
and A-Trak (World DMC champion, Kanye West DJ). The following year saw Woody
become 2 times World Champion when he stormed the Vestax Extravaganza World
finals beating off competition from 14 countries. Since
then Woody has been proving the point that he rocks dancefloors as effectively
as he murders dj's in battle, sharing the stage worldwide alongside many of
musics biggest names including Eminem, Black Eyed Peas, Cypress Hill, De La Soul
and the Stereo Mc's. In 2002 Woody was asked to join the US Superrappin Tour as
the only Brit alongside highly acclaimed US rap artists Lootpack (Madlib aka
Quasimoto, Wildchild & DJ Romes), Declaime, Lone Catalist and DJ's Dopey (2003
World DMC Champ) & Ptrix (US DMC Champ), providing American audiences with a
rare glimpse of the cream of UK turntablism. In the last 4 years Woody has
toured relentlessly in various incarnations taking in South Africa, Venezuela,
Brasil, India, Trinidad, Russia, Japan, China, Canada and virtually every
country in Europe. In 2003 he joined UK hip hop's most accomplished tour the
&..39;Russian Percussian' alongside acclaimed producer DJ Vadim, from this
collaboration it was a natural progression for Woody to become
resident scratch assassin for Ninjatunes' hip hop super-crew One Self, recording
the perfect musical scratchscapes to compliment Vadims production on One Self's
debut LP 'Children Of Possiblity' released in 2005. As a perminant fixture in
One Self's renowned live show Woody in an integral part, peppering the set with
his trademark routines and scratches. With over 130 shows in 2005 alone Woody
has been performing to crowds of anything between 500 and 30 000 at some of
Europes biggest festivals and most prestigious venues, from the main stage at
The Big Chill or Spain's epic Monegro festival to London's infamous london Jazz
Cafe. The One Self live show has been causing a stir all over Europe with Radio
sessions for BBC Radio One and TV appearances on Channel 4, the 'Times'
described them as the "best newcomers of 2005". Aside from collaborations with
DJ Vadim and One Self, Woody 's cuts have graced tracks from artists ranging
from UK Hip Hop vets Krispy, Evil Ed (Jamoni), Sirconical
(Twisted Nerve) and even a remix for Guru of the legendary Gangstarr. 2006 sees
Woody channel his creativity into more recordings with a host of solo projects
in the pipeline, starting with a UK tour and mixtape with Canada's DJ Dopey in
March and the launch of his 'A Country Practice' mix CD series and 'Scratch
Fodder' battle breaks dropping in April and an all new live project planned for
mid 2006 you can expect to hear alot more from the Wooden one.
