At about 8pm, someone flicks a switch, and people of every age and persuasion head towards the lights, looking forward to what promises to be their best night out of the year. We chose the Quadrant Park Reunions party Boxing Night Special, and as our taxi glides along Hope Street, we are bursting with expectations for the biggest Quad night of 2008.</p><p></p><p>And so at 10pm, we find ourselves standing outside The New Picket, a small venue on the edge of town, tucked away under the imposing gaze of the Anglican Cathedral. It’s just waking up inside the club and it takes a few minutes for the light to turn green and the trickle of people through the door to turn into a steady flow. By the time we find the cloakroom and get some drinks, John Kelly is behind the decks and is warming the cold room up nicely. The club fills fast and hits full capacity long before the clock chimes midnight. </p><p></p><p>Mike Knowler is next on the decks and rolls out the Quad classics in perfect order to a room brimming with Christmas-Quad-love. Everyone cheers for N-Joi’s Anthem: “I’m in love with you … and you … and you …” and so it continues. Andy Carroll steps up around midnight and keeps the big tunes coming. The Quad faithful, old and new, raise their hands time and again to the beats and breakdowns of ageless Quadrant Park classic tunes.</p><p></p><p>The last hour sees John Kelly return to the decks and dance floor is still packed. If you look towards the middle of the crowd you’ll see Mike Knowler dancing, and shaking hands with everyone around him. It’s great fun to watch the Quadfather, as he stands surrounded by an adoring flock, who are still saying thank you to him nearly twenty years after he lit Quadrant Park torch. </p><p></p><p>The party is still going strong at 3am when they turn off the music and there’s a collective groan of disappointment. Andy Carroll argues for more time but rules are rules so, reluctantly, we get our coats. Under the lights, you can see people smiling, and as they head into the night the words on everyone’s lips are “That was great, when’s the next one?” ……</p><p></p><p></p><p>Well, we can’t confirm the next one just yet but it’s definitely happening. Just keep an eye out for the daffodils, and when they are in full bloom, it will be time.
