Hairline scratches usually make the record sound like youre frying bacon on it, and usually cant be gotten rid of totally.

I can recommend you give all your records a good clean with a dilute mix of washing up liquid (fairy) and fairly warm water. You will need a mega soft cloth too, which has never been used before (otherwise it may have gritty particles in it).

Fairy works becuase the crud in record grooves is mostly dried in grease from your hands......and as you know, fairy gets rid of grease :).

If theres millions of tiny scratches over the surface of the vinyl, Im not sure anything can be done about that unfortunately.

Thanks m8 ,

It does sound a bit like bacon frying but I cant see any hairline or other scratches.

I might have a go with the fairy liquid lol? Did it remove crackles ?

It must be some kind of dirt as like i say there are no visible scratches.

I just wondered if anyone had tried any of the cleaning solvents available?

Can anyone reccomend a good cloth to get? Is it worth buying a proper anti static one or can I get a cheap one

Ive used a ripped up old pair of underwear before.....lol. :$

Somebody once told me that 'dust guard' edition MrSheen was good at keeping crud off your records - and brings em up a nice shine too - but Ive never tried it. You have to be carrfull spraying chemicals on them becuase it could react with the composite polyvinyl material over a long period of time.

I have a 'bar' (a stick type thing) with static dralon type cloth on, but I hardly use it. Something soft enough to not harm your records should be OK - cos even dry paper towels can be abrasive (you can scratch your glasses with it anyway), and doesnt give bits everywhere, some thickish decent old cotton grundies and a bit of luke warm soapy water always worked for me when I needed it. You dont have to go mad with it though! lol.
