Got back from Edinburgh last night. Managed to get to all the record shops there, so since it's been a while since anyone's done a city record shop review, here's mine on Edinburgh: Record Shak - 69 Clerk St (one of the main streets that changes it's name every 200 yrds) Second hand but no dance records at all. Very Indie. This seemed to be a recuring theme. I found, as a whole, the city seemed more Indie / Rock orientated. Hog's Head - 62 South Clerk St Second hand but again no dance records whatsoever. There was an Oxfam Music shop on Clerk St which isn't listed in Yell, which proved to be OK. Got a few 50p bargains. Backbeat Records - 31 East Crosscauseway (just off Clerk St). No dance/house records at all. In fact no 12 inches. Avalanche - 63 Cockburn St (again in the center, not far off South Bridge St / Clerk St) Mostly Indie (plus CD's and DVD's). Small dance selection and even smaller 2nd hand selection (maybe 20 records). Nothing of interest apart from a KLF 12 which they couldn't find the vinyl of behind the counter. Fopp-Music Film & Books - 55 Cockburn St No second hand but good selection of new tunes. Small bargain section of new stuff. Uber-Disco - 36 Cockburn St, Edinburgh Mostly new tunes but small selection of 2nd hand which suspiciously has no prices on. Never found out the prices of anything as there was nothing of any real interest - stuff like Camisra / Strike. They all had stickers on saying "Massive rare rare rare tune", when quite frankly they mostly were neither rare or massive. Underground Solution - 9 Cockburn St, Edinburgh Excellent shop, very friendly staff. Unfortunately mostly new stuff. Small selection of 2nd hand but it was from 98 onwards. Vinyl Villains 5 Elm Row (bit of a way out to the North) 2nd hand shop, mostly specialising in rock (in fact anything but dance). A few records of interest in the bargain section below the main racks. Oxfam Music Shop 64 Raeburn Place Bit of a treck in the North part of the city but well worth it. By far the best record shop in Edinburgh I found. Good 2nd hand specialist dance section all in mint condition with prices from 99p to £1.99. Backtracksmusic.Co.UK - 17 Brougham St, Tollcross (a bit out of town center, better to get there by car). Not bad. A few bargains to be had, but generally the records weren't in top nick, for instance there's still a copy of that Just Be Good To Me one sided promo thing in there - it has a scratch on though - not too sure how badly it affects play (didn't have my Vestax with me unfortunately). Oldies Museum Records 3a West Maitland St (again best by car for this one). There's a fairly big selction of early 90's 12's under the normal racks. All pretty much in mint / unplayed condidtion but also absolutely shite tunes (alot of Jason Donovon, Sonia etc). A lot of duplicates as well which means they're not a collection but more likely a load of shite returns they've got hold of. Again, suspiciously, no prices displayed and when questioned the owner just said "it depends on how many you get" - well thanks for that one Sherlock! After going through the lot, I only found 9 tunes of interest. On enquiring on a price was told £25. They weren't worth that so I left them. Although I've got to say it did annoy me that they're were no prices displayed to begin with, especially after I'd gone through the lot. It pretty much summed up Edinburgh as far as 2nd hand dance vinyl goes to be honest. Mainly poor, with the record shop owners not having much of a clue. Not a patch on other cities. Stick with London - it's infinitely better!
