In a world of my own
When I open SoulSeek now it freezes my PC for about 20 seconds then my cursur will move for about 10 seconds then it freezes for 20 seconds, when its frozen I cant open task manager or anything in then I have to catch it when its unfrozen to close SoulSeek off. Once Soulseek is shut down the PC carrys on freezing like this for a further 2 or 3 minutes.

Ive been in MSconfig and dissabled a load of shit thats been running on my PC from start up and this hasnt solved it

Ive uninstalled the SS app and deleted all the files for it in the registry and reinstalled it getting the latest verion and it still spasmodically freezes my PC

I thought it might be because its scannin my files however after deleting the reg and uninstalling it there are no files for it to scan when opening as its not configured to read any files.

got me stumped anyone got any ideas ?

Windows XP Pro Op system

ps, ive not had a problem with this app before, and its started happening since ive been on a peer to peer network however I have run SS off a peer to peer before

Where did you get soulseek from?

As the "official" site has been hacked for yonks now, and there's been a spyware version on there, hope you've not downloaded that

This is the only site to trust:

http://slsk.blogspot.com/

Lastest version is always at the top.

If, you have the proper version, I'd back up all your config files and un-install, then re-install a newer version.

remove any of that peer2peer networking shite that kazaa puts on for a kick off mate

then right click on the soulseek icon on ur desktop or on the start menu and then go to properties, then compatibility (might be in the advanced bit) and change the compatibility to windows 98

problem solved, shouldnt crash again - mine hasnt since i done that about a month ago

if u search the soulseek forums there is a patch u can apply i read that stops it from freezing im sure, also delete the .cfg files mate

youll have to add people to ur list again so make a note of em

You can't get someone's password even if they are sharing their whole hard drive, if you look in their program files/soulseek folder it'll appear empty - I think the program does this on purpose to prevent people nicking each others' logins.

Spot on the money with that fella

A few of the mods on the soulseek forums were getting PM's off folks saying they'd had their passwords changed and whatnot, and they found that if users were sharing the cfg files, you could find out usernames/passwords, so nir managed to add a filter to that in a recent-ish release.

well thats something at least, all they have do now is sort it so its a 24/7 online thing the muppets

 :naughty:

Tsk tsk, don't blaspheme soulseek, when it works it works well and we love it so, but all things have to be upgraded, maintained, so there will always be downtime, it's the nature of the beast...

Agreed - it is free after all.... The fact that it's managed to keep going without resorting to adverts, spyware etc. is pretty impressive. The server outages used to be a lot worse a year or two ago anyway (although I don't go on there as much these days)

I pay for privileges too, but I don't expect that will guarantee anything!

That's unfortunate.

They don't always get a chance to send a message though, if the server goes offline, it'll take time to re-boot it and sort out any problems they might have once it's back online.

Also, don't know if you remember the problem they had with their IP address, as for a while users had to edit their 'hosts' file on their pc's to allow them access to the site/forums and also one of the admins had implemented a patch where if you closed down soulseek and re-opened it quickly (after users files failing) you wouldn't be able to connect, as your IP address had been added to a temporary banned list.

This was to combat some fool who was using scripting in the chat rooms, and flooding a lot.

During that period I became annoyed with it all, but understood why there was limited access, even though I had paid for privileges, you just have to be patient.

This last week it has been down a couple of times that I have noticed, it's nothing like the downtime it used to have though.
