The version that I played was the Joey Negro remix from the white label only release on the 12" you have put a link to
(along with a mellow remix by the Infinite Wheel who have been mentioned on here quite recently for thier own work).

It is very high in my top 25 submitted for the Top 100 (and if you all haven`t done yours yet why not?? the more the better!!).

It is the haunting vocal that does it for me. It still puts a shiver down my spine when I hear it now.

Other than that I know feck all. Unsure whether the Sub Rosa that later released Some Changes on Essence record in 2003 are the same outfit. They are linked as the same band on Discogs but I think this maybe a mistake.

Not sure about the vocals but can appreciate your point as they do sound similar.

Maybe others can shed more light on this?

Not your typical Zone at Jenks bar tune - I played it only a couple of times because I liked it so much and it seems to have been caught on a couple of tapes and picked up from those.

I have just checked on the Z Records website and it is down as a Joey Negro production on Intrigue Records (not Z records as listed on Discogs). No other info though.

Sent an email asking for further info - will keep ya posted if I get a reply.

Cheers for the digging & info Barrie - much appreciated :king:

Totally agree re the haunting vocal... blew me away when I 1st heard it & still does now (posted after listening to it full blast in me car last night).

I never heard it out back in the day & have got Al Oldskooldazed to thank for playing it on Piraterevival back in 2003/4 & sending me a rip until I found the tune (pre-Discogs so it was a riiiiight bastard to nail lol).

I know you've always namechecked it as a favourite tune but didn't know if it was a Barrie Jay secret weapon that no-one else picked up on as I've googled n googled n can't find it named or played by anyone else...

Did you get mailed it or did you buy it ? And who from ?

Sorry for being a nosey fucker :D

defo a dave lee production, and im sure its a Z Records release, im a fond collector of Z/dave lee, and this looks like a promo for the label, that may of been in conjunction with intrigue, the promo cat' is similar to a Z/dave lee promo cat' .
just to clear it that up. personally, i think it sounds like a DL deep track.
Shame it never got a full release, probs coz the style of music wasnt 'in' at that moment in time

Cheers Chris... when you say it sounds like a Dave Lee deep track - anything else you could recommend me listening to ? I knew he was part of M D Emm before him n Mark Ryder parted was but I have to say that Dave Lee / Joey Negro I associate with Raven Maize & then onto discoey 'light' fluff stuff rather than deep stuff like Ride the wave... I'm prolly doing him a disservice !

I honestly cannot recall whether it got mailed to me, I was on ooodles of mailing lists back in the day, if it was it was sure a limited list as John J never got one and we were more or less on all the same lists.

Of course, I worked at Melody House at the time, and usually got my hands on all the promos they got sent, so it more likely originated there.

Agreed it was a bugga to find pre net days. I always tried to pick up tunes that were obscure and hard to find that no one else played.

To the best of my knowledge I was the only DJ that picked up on this tune.
