temp folder help

my Anti-Virus seems to scan this from what used to be 20 mins to now over 1 hour does this mean as it says "temporary folder" that i can delete the contents as when im watching the anit-virus scan it all seems to be ebay stuff
if i delete all the contents of the folder will this affect the running of my computer or is it just trash that should be deleted

had a look in Temporary internet files and they seem pretty small so how can AVG be finding nearly 150,000 files to scan in the Temporary folder deffo keep seeing ebay stuff pop up

anybody have any ideas
