I meant a dry storage place where you could keep an old car for years until you're ready to restore it
I'm guessing that most options would be really expensive, so i'm curious if there's any cheapish way of doing it. I doubt there is unless you have a friend with a spare corner of a warehouse, or an unused garage, but it's worth asking to see what options are out there.
I've got a fresh car now and have my old one lying around. But the head gasket's gone and rather than ringing the scrapyard, i'd rather store it somewhere until I know what to do with it.

You're probably right D. There's an engine on ebay for 300, but it's in Ireland and doesn't say how many miles it's done or the condition. The radiator was pissing oil out with the water too, so it's a big job, but not for me at this stage in my life having never done repair work on that scale. I've got another car too, so no point me fixing it up for myself.
I reckon it'll be collectable in the future though as it's a good looking car and THE hot hatch of it's day.
It's taking up room on the drive though and it's not going to go very far in the conditions it's in, unless I tow it.

If your serious about storing then drain all fluids, ensure all seals are water tight, put the car on axle stands and romove the wheels and cover it with a high grade but breathable sheets.
A friend did none of the above when storing his old Porsche and after 5 years of sitting still turned a £20k car into a £5k non running good for parts only Porsche. His only saving grace was that he removed the private plate from the car which was valued at £10k+.
Be careful as I beleive the government have introduced a new insurance requirement for all cars requiring insurance even if off the road and not reg (SORN i think)

What car is it? Rather than scrap it, put it on eBay with an honest description and LOTS of good quality pics. Use the words 'spares or repair' and 'project' as keywords in the title. You'll most likely get more money than you would from the scrappie, and the car will have a chance to live again
PS head gaskets aren't too complicated to change on older cars, if you have a decent set of tools and a Haynes Manual you could fix it yourself inside of a weekend.

It'll be a tall order for me who's never done any similar jobs on a car:lol:
I've never sold anything on ebay, so haven't even looked into a selling account. In the past i've given my old stuff to my brother, or whoever wanted something, but I don't know if i'd want to risk a headache from some disgruntled buyer not being happy with it anyway. The more i'm thinking about it at the moment, the more i'm thinking about just scrapping it. It's just a shame as i've probably spent nearly 2 grand on it in the last 18 months already, yet lost out on a trade in because it was out of action:|

Ah, fair enough. Make sure you ring a few and get prices, let me know how you get on. There are several EMR recycling centres near you, they will pay by the ton over the weighbridge so would probably get the best price but you have to get it there yourself.

Wet liner engine, cunto's 'big time cause a slipped liner seal will give the same symptoms as a blown head gasket. Or cracked head. Also if the gadgey is clueless taking the head off wrong it disturbs the liners, so refaced head and gasket go on n you still get the same prob as before.
actually Jim while i remember the oil filter housing is water cooled on some of them engines, get this checked before you condemn it, if this goes it allows oil n water to mix..

Sorry I've no contacts for this myself, but if I was looking for one I'd be heading for the Pirate Bay or some other download site rather than pay hundreds of pounds. I did find one on there but it was for North America and Canada - I bet with a bit more searching on torrents one could be found.

Blimey, that's worrying! I've just bought a car and stuck it in the garage with the intention of only getting it out in the summer for a couple of thousand miles per year.
I would not worry about it too much, the Porsche was store outside and had about 1/2 inch of moss on it and he had to literally cut the cover off the car when he finally decided to sell it.
My wife used to have an old mini which used to do 800 miles a year and it ran without any faults ever
I spotted that site too mate, and thought about buying there, but after checking it out it looks well dodgy and the links aren't really going to anything to suggest otherwise. It's not an easy task on the torrents either as you say. I found a good torrent for some of their maps, but not the Pro ones that I need for my model

Yeah, I don't think I'd be giving my credit card details lol. Their address and phone number is listed under 'contacts' though, it might be worth a call to see if they take paypal. They can't put them on eBay cos they are obviously copies but they may have done in the past and still have a Paypal account.
