Just switched on my home computer to discover i must have activated a virus last night :(.

When I start windows XP pro, I log in with my name on the log in screen, but all I get is my desktop picture..........nothing else, just a picture of autumn leaves.

Theres no crtl alt delete, no start menu or anything. When I press ctrl alt delete it quite cheekily informs me that "this function has been disabled by the Administrator". and just says "ok". Thats it.

I tried safe mode, and that just loads to a black screen with "safe mode" at each corner, and again, I cant get to anything same as in normal mode.

I tried to safe mode to Administrator, and at first it let me in, I ran a full system scan with AVG and spybot etc........it found nothing. Again, there was no desktop, no start menu (even using keyboard shortcut), but I managed to run them with ctrl alt delete and running "explorer.exe" as a new task.
I looked to find acess to the system restore function, but it seems theres no shortcut to the process when you cant acess the start menu. :(.

I then re booted, and it was just the same. :0

I dunno what do do now. Im sat on my fathers laptop, thinking, "oh-oh".

I was hoping to get back into safe mode as administrator, use the windows explorer panel and link up the laptop and transfer all my most vital data........but Ive just tried that, and it wont let me access the network to the laptop (it used to do easily before), saying I havent the permission - I am the bloody administrator though!.

Looks like come cnuts locked me out my own machine. Fantastic :(.

Any ideas whats going on peeps? Where do i turn from here?

Thanks a lot for any quick replies.

Thanks bud, but it hasnt changed anything. :|

Ive managed to transfer a small selection of files via safe mode to another computer.

I suppose I have to flatten the bloody thing now. goddamn it.

Well, thats me busy tomorrow night and the night after.

Its about time billy gates spent a few billion sorting out his software flaws, that way these hackers and virus writers wouldnt have to prove thier points quite so often.........I cant blame them for writing such virus's, even though its fubar'd my computer to some extent. Its a bastard when it happens to you though, lol.

Sirius bud:wave: ,

There should be an option somewhere to press "r" to repair a windows installation rather than a system restore. If i remember rightly, you need to boot from the CD and there is an option there somewhere......

Im pretty sure I have stumbled across this before and it worked - but there again I could have dreamt the whole thing up.
