I remember reading about this last year, from what i remember its down to climate change and european bees and wasps coming to live here, transported in shipping goods etc too, then they have mixed in with ours (or replaced them) to produce these goliath sized beasts that you swear will crack the window pane if it hits it any harder!.
Also, I seem to remember that some chemicals and pesticides that we insist on sloshing over all the fields n stuff are making them into double hard resistant little bastards and general fucking up of the whole ecology cycle......which is nice:S .
It will be like alfred hitchcocks film only "The Bees" rather than "the birds"........do birds eat bees and wasps? Whats thier predator? Theres a downturn in birds too in this country so that may have something to do with it. These gravel gardens, no hedges and excessive sized decking instead of lawns craze is contributing to the decline from what I believe - so think twice about doing a ground force peeps!. birds cant pull worms from 4" thick worth of pebbles, and cant really build a nest in a little 'box' plant in a plant pot near the decking which used to be a lawn!.

Its a good job I hardly ever go outside innit, lol, cant be doing with wasps  .

Im gonna patent a hole free house, where no insect can get in. Sounds lush to me!, no more spiders, bees, wasps, woodlice or even slugs in the house! That would be excellent.

Sirius.

If nothing can get in, nothing can get out

Would that mean you'd seal yourself in, mummification anyone?

Dunno about mumification, but its already like Wonka's Chocolate Factory.......the neighbours dont see anyone enter or anyone leave, but they know something goes on in here! lol.

Sirius.

I remember someone telling me when I was a kid that wasps were the most pointless creature on the Earth, and that they weren't part of the food chain. However, I've since learnt that they apparently play quite an important part in pest control by eating insect larvae and they also finish off bits of flesh hanging off rotting animal carcasses, which they also feed to their young, and any old rotten shit that we leave lying around. Not being completly unhealthy, they sumpliment their digusting diet with fruit.

The nutters that feed on wasps are skunks, racoons, black bears, birds and some spiders, and even some stupid people eat the larvae that are a good source of protein.

If you want to avoid them forever, I suggest you move to Siberia, apparently there aren't any wasps there.

One thing I admit to being scared of.....wasps :(

Never been stung and never want to. Back to the the Euro Wasp thing...I saw one of these about 5-6 years ago and it was HUGE and I mean HUGE.

It must have been as long as my thumb (and I'm a world record holder for longest thumb).

Anyway...its just lying there and a m8 goes to kill it. It take of like a Harrier Jump Jet and starts flying round the room. Now almost in a state of hysteria, I think I run of and hide. 12 whack later and its a gonner.

Safe to say that I didn't go anywhere near it - think I was kinda shivering in the corner or something.

Don't want o come face to face with one again :|

Lol, so was i!! I proper shit meself seeing a blue object with 8 legs running towards me!!

I hate spiders soooo much although recently ive been letting them go about their own business, ive even got rid of one from the bath tub to the garden before i washed me hair, where usually i would have washed it down the sink! Dunno whats come over me? I do know if it was a huge one i would scream the house down though. I try not to let my daughter see my fear because i really dont want her getting a fear for them too.

Does anyone else reckon all these 'massive' wasps we're seeing this early are the 'Queens' looking to start the next colony?

I'm sad enough to have looked this up:

A social wasp colony lasts only 1 year. Paper wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets build a new nest from scratch each year and do not reuse the previous year's nest. The only wasps to overwinter are the fertilized queens. All the workers from a colony die with the first frosts.

I had two wasps nests last year, one in the utility room ceiling, and one in the main batroom attic. The house was full of them, i had to get out some Terrminix company and they charged me £150!

I bloody hate them, and run like a spaz whenever they are near.

:)
