What do you want from an old school night?

seriously good thread dude, I know there has been banter on FB and the OSA doo is sorted now but we can use the info from here to organise another one
Personally I dont mind, i'm an Italian House nut as most of you know but dont mind most genres. A good mix of tunes and some great folk with no dick heads is fine with me

As you say Dan, Piano has it's place, but it isn't the be all and end all for me and I much prefer the classy stuff rather than the screaming anthems. My favourite club of all time Pleasuredrome farnworth had a good mix of styles, heavy on breaks and darker harder stuff with piano mixed in for good measure, but Welly has always been a genius on the decks and could do it with ease. Legends - my second favourite club back in the day built the night from downtempo up to more anthemy stuff, but also without overdoing it. It's how I remember clubs back in the day. Personally now, i'd go for breakbeats first and foremost and i'd be happy with that all night, but by the same admission I could see how a piano junky could feel the same way about their favourite style.
I just find it a chore (grating on the ears) to listen to piano for too long, especially anthems that i've heard a million times before. I want a bit more creativity than that and people digging deeper than tunes that everybody plays for me to keep listening to them.

A wasted vote then. It wouldn't affect the next night and rightly so, but it'll give a better understanding of the average OSA peep and without your vote it'll be less accurate. It's your call though Chris, but seeing as you missed the humour of the saga on FB then I can understand your position 
What I want from an old skool night you just can't get anymore...
A maximum of 3 DJs - anymore and it's a waste of time for the DJs playing, as you can't get into 30 or 45 minute sets, a minimum of 2 hour sets is required as per back in the day.
A decent venue that is dark, dingy and like a warehouse - these have all gone now, and we're left with hybrid bar-clubs (ie a bar with a 'dancefloor' area of about 6 foot) or clubs that are so bright, you may as well be stood outside under the streetlights.
A good sound system, Funktion One are shit and anyone that bangs on about them must have had their ears burst at some point as it's all high end and lows with no midrange, the separation is too great and unless you are in a certain spot directly under the speakers, it sounds shit.
Good luck with the music crusade Jim, I banged on about too much piano years ago on here and it'll never change, there are too many people that like it - sheep/music for the masses and hence why the site name and music policy has remained the same.
It takes some serious planning and organisation to get things right and a lot of the nights have lacked a lot of the above and I won't go to them anymore as I don't want to be stood around bored for most of the night. Going way back is the answer, Hip Hop, Electro, Soul and Funk is where it's at now for me and luckily the people doing these kind of nights are taking the time to plan it well.

I am going to a night (non Old Skool) next Saturday where all those rules are applied perfectly.
Well our bak2wax night kicks off with early electro, italo disco etc from Vee. My sets usually a mixture of hiphouse,warehouse, Chicago and piano towards then end. Dan plays more obscure italo and piano which you don't hear anywhere else bar jenks perhaps and Ste Huxley has more remixes than anyone I know. You never know what he's gonna pull out but it's always a cracker so I don't know what category you would put our night in?
One thing I do know is there is a right good little group of us get together for this and we have a better time here than at many other night's we have been to so the company and socialising side of it is as important to the night as the music is

I like to hear a bit of everything house, techno-house (frank de wulf, belgian stuff new beat etc etc, not proper detroit style) piano,, italo breakbeat tunes but not the really really fast stuff from 92-93, more at a house tempo, hip house, chicago house, love the beats. A few anthems HAVE TO BE PLAYED. Doesnt have to be a piano anthem tho
Atmosphere and people has to be happy vibes, genuine music lovers who know a good tune, and will dance to it even if they havent heard it before.. Everyone bouncin, top sound system, safe ravin
Top DJ's a MUST with good knowledge of crowds and music and who isnt afraid to play a tune with a risk factor, e.g. people not liking it.
I myself sometimes feel pigeon holed as to what sort of DJ I am, this is because the majority of the events I play at have lots of piano tunes played (cos thats just cos piano is so popular). But I have many dimensions.
Back in the day allsorts was played and everyone loved it, old skool now is 'revival and nostalgia' basically and the majority of people in the north happen to like piano tunes cos thats what they remember. And if they dont remember it, therefore its shit. That does make me laugh!

I like this, the attitude is right. Although there are views to be aired here.
Different nights/different vibes, you wouldn't expect much else but piano from a Jenks reunion but you wouldn't want to hear piano at a Sheffield bleeps fest... I would attend both events and have an ace time as long as my mates were on form and there were no dick heads.
I do like a dark room and low roof. I rememeber the garage in Notts had a low roof. Sweat dripping, music throbbing. I'm not really arsed who's DJ'ing as long as they've got a few skills.
You can get off your face and dance with your mates to some old skool funk...

As for dancing to any old shite, then why even bother going to an old school club if you can get off on anything? Why not just pop into the town centre and dance to some Pop Idol/X Factor shite if that tickles your fancy
Bottom line is if something annoys you then you aren't gonna dance to it, but if our Bernie can get off dancing to an orbital sander, or a washing machine on a spin cycle, then more power to her
For people that care what they listen to though, then they need more than a bit of One Direction to get their groove on
