What does the term 'Rave' mean to you.

I think it became a really dirty word around 91/92 because of the media etc. but now I think its become something better again that you can associate with times back then.

Noone talks all glassy eyed about Blackburn "Parties" - they were the Blackburn "Raves"

The more difficult word for me is 'Raver'. Was I a "raver" back then - er yes, but I certainly didn't have white gloves, a double bubble shirt and a shiney stick.

I may have had some red Fila tho...:$

the term Rave holds so many memories for me

i was a bit young back in the day to go to or experiance a rave but i was kept awake listening to stories from my uncle who was avid "blackburn raver"

I used to baby sit his girfriends lil bambino's while they went "raving" most weekends and often came home in some weary states thats if they did come home!! i remember a massive rave was busted years ago in wakefield and a few of them got arrested etc..........

to hear the term now seems so old fashioned

but hearing it over the weekend when we all went to the missing rave it felt very strange saying it so i found myself saying "that rave thingy" :$

im sure i will get more experiance saying it over the next few years

Why do people always take me the wrong way i dont know...

Rave or Raver who cares one and the same.....we were all ravers goin to raves at one point....so why do we turn our noses up at it nowadayz .....and just because a few people decided to go wear white gloves and suck dummies does not make this word (s) a bad...well not in my book anyway...its a heritage im proud to be part of.......i always though peeps who's did that things were cheesy quavers quite the opposite of hardcore ravers

The word today sounds out of place cus raves and ravers are past not present....the word belonged to part of an era which is no longer with us unfortunately....but i refuse to accept its a poo word cus like it or not we were once all ravers phones:

Rave to me means the illegal warehouse 'raves' - as Mart has said, they weren't called parties back then, they were billed/called raves.

I still like the word tbh, nowt against it, and I wouldn't cringe if it came up in a conversation that I was once a 'raver' - I still am

I wasn't sticking my nose up at it hun. I went the opposite to the "raves then clubs" thing. Ok the first 'dance' event I went to was in field and was at the end of the orbital era, but when I started going proper it as to a club. I then went to many of the big pay raves in 91/92.

As Jammer says they were always called and always billed as 'Raves'. We always called them 'Raves' and we were all 'Ravers' not 'Partys or 'Partyists' -LOL. The only 'parties' I went to were either in someones house or the free ones set up by travellers.

Its just the understanding of the word "raver" that I was saying was difficult. When they say 'Raver' - to me they think of people like the 'cheesy quaver' or whatever you want to call it.

Not dissing it or them by any means, I was just having a joke naming some of the things you used to see thats all.

I disagree........ We always called them Parties in even in 91. I can distinctly remember my brother pulling me to one side and telling me they are not 'raves' they are 'parties'..... ever since then I always called them that and most people did in our area........ .... it was always .... "Big Party Kicking off in ....(usually some muddy field or squat)............. we all knew what it meant. All of the Travellers festivals were called parties...... maybe coz that was the scene I was in (the grungy hardcore scene.......think castle morton).

Anyway to the Point - if someone says Rave to me ... I think PARTY. Thats all the word means to me, just a simple translation.

Party in a muddy field or squat might have been a party, but round 'ere twas always a warehouse rave. Did you go to any of the warehouse ones, or just outdoor type events?

lol i've always called outdoor events using marquees RAVES
indoor parties usually in a warehouse WAREHOUSE PARTIES
and in 88 usually in a disused scrapyard ACID HOUSE PARTIES

I did go to a few warehouse parties in London...... but I also went to a few in aircraft hangers and some large barns or agriculture warehouse things..... oh yeees I loved a good ol barn dance

No doubt I reiterating what has been said by others...

I was a couple of years too young to get to any of the first wave 'raves' down South... somewhat gutted me as a kid, but I was still into the music.

"Rave" for me used to reference the orbital and warehouse parties round London, Essex, Kent and the Home Counties... never really heard too much about the scene in the North of England, but it was just as wild as down here by all accounts. Guess that was cos the pirates would only advertise what was local.

As a few others have said, the term became over-used and a by-word for 'drug taking, peace-disturbing criminal activity' by the Press. Then, of course, the phrase was abused by the commercial end of the music industry to sell loads of crap compilations to kiddies that didn't have a clue.

I only went to a few old school raves... Telepathy, Eclipse, blah blah - the majority of my 90s were spent clubbing...though the hardcore and drum and bass scene carried the term through for a good few years.

Oh, but the free party scene still uses the term down here sporadically, if there's a party involving a fook off sound system (or five - hehe) and lots of spangle-heads dancing in the middle of nowhere, paying £2 for a can of Red Stripe.

Rave to me means a paticular style of music. I asscoiate rave to altern8 and guru josh and the harder side of dance.
