I know that we have had a fave book thread before, but that was ages ago. What is everyone reading at the mo?

I have 3 on the go:

Irvine Welsh- 'Glue'. Good so far even if the constant deciphering of the scottish language is a bit hard.

Sylvia Plath- 'The Bell Jar'. Only a few pages in, using it mainly as (ahem :$ ) bathroom reading.

Helen Walsh- 'Brass'. Not as good as i had hoped, only half way in though so it might pick up.

Anyone reading anything that they can recommend for when these are done?

:)

What king of thing do you fancy? What subjects do you like or find interesting?

You might like the Helen Walsh one, its about a young girl (14) who starts going out, taking drugs and basically gets into a never ending spiral of drugs and debauchery (sp?). Its quite well written but easy to follow, and its aimed at a youngish audience.

If you go to Waterstones (aka heaven) its on the 2 for 3 promo at the mo

Im still embarassed that I havent read a book since high school some 10 yeras ago or so.

With studies taking time after school had finished, the advent of the Internet and its speed reading inducing effect, I dunno if Id have the patience to read a book ever again. :(. I have lost the art of reading, the pages and letters get all jumbled up and I struggle to follow a straight line without dropping a line if you know what I mean. Very frustrating to even read a few pages, and hard to absorb into anything as its not freeflow reading. I really do struggle to read properly, and its a shame becuase I know Im missing out.

Any tips? I think I may have some form of dislexia creeping in , I dunno, my typing is getting bad too with letters going the wrong way around sometimes.

If I was to start a stab at reading, what would you recommend as a small starter book? - more advanced than Noddy and the cat in the hat though, lol. Sci Fi would probably be my bag I think, or 'what if' scenario's.

You'll love Glue I reckon (you read any of his stuff before?), I've just finished his 'Porno' (follow up to trainspotting) and that was marvelous

I'm currently reading a HP 1150 install guide, waste of fucking time that (see help forum thread)

At work we lost the net for a while, that's when I started reading again, in my drawer at work are Cock & Bull, a book on Kraftwerk(? the name escapes me? ), and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, so it's a right mixed bag for me, I wish I could read more, but I find it hard to get time to read, shame, as it's ace :)

What i really like about this book is how well the characters are formed, i really do feel as though i know them pretty well. And i love the way the story is unfolded from the four main carachters (sp?, lol nearlly a bottle of cheap vino down) perspective, so you get a more global picture of the dynamics of the friendship group rather than just one take of it. I was suprised to see him bring in Begbie et al from trainspotting, it really is good stuff. Vey honest, raw yet emotional at the same time. He makes you feel as though your part of the book- and that is great :)

Its also fantastic that he gave you the info on the parents, really gives you an insight to the upbringing, makes you see the culture and how this impacts upon the men that they become

In a Pineapple under the sea
Just finished "Tis" by Frank McCourt, it's the follow on from Angela's Ashes top book  (Must be my Irish roots) In the middle of "The scarlet letter" by Nataniel Hawthorn at the mo but thats for college :p Mind you it's not a bad read. Got "Gang War" by Peter Walsh sat just waiting to be opened, but I can't find the time. Supposed to be top, about all the turf wars in Manc from days gone by. Came highly recomended from someone who is in it LOL. You can't beat a good book  better than a film as it gets your mind working creating an image.

Lol and I agree with you amelie, waterstones is my heaven too  I find it impossible to leave without buying a book :| and now I work right by it too  ;)

Im reading The Celestine Prophecy at the mo, Ive read it before but since turning 30 Ive gone all deep and spiritual so I thought Id read it again :D

Im also trying to finish The Fix which Ive been reading for ages, its about the drug trade....its very interesting, but its gone a little bit heavy on the brain, as its about figures and weights

K-T - if you want to start reading and you like girlie magazines, read anything by Marian Keyes, her books are ace......Ive got all of them, I'll lend you one if you like ;) I quite like a trashy novel too :$ ;)
