I have a small installation program which installs the frauhenhofer mp3 codec as part of windows - this allows you to load and save mp3 in any windows audio program (e.g. cooledit, soundforge, wavelab). It makes very nice quality mp3s and encodes them quickly as well (obviously depending on the speed of your PC). It's only a small-ish installation file, if you want it let me know and I'll email it when I'm back at home.

The frauhenhofer mp3 is Ok. Theres the newer Mp3Pro I use which is supposed to be good quality cos it cleverly retains extra audio frequency info or sommet. Check it out anywayz.

I've used to use Xing but now I use LAME and I like the results so Im sticking with that.
I thought that mp3pro only encodes at a low bit rate so even though the files sound ok there still only equivalent to normal mp3 at 128k or so which is to low for me to bother with (vbr all the way for me)
