Hi. I may have blagged work to purchase me Windows XP Pro.....

......they usually get those 'upgrade discs', well they did for the jump to windows 95 to windows 98 about three years ago :| .

Anyway, to get to the point, an upgrade Cd costs about 141 quid ex vat...... , and theres no way they would go for that....however, the OEM version of a new CD is only about £90....but you have to buy a computer or some part of a computer in order to buy it.

Does it need to be something substantial? Can you just buy a 2.99 mouse and qualify for bypassing the funny legality thing? and if so, who is stupid enough to pay for an upgrade CD?

I dont get it, how its almost twice the price for an upgrade when you can get a new one entirely with a piece of PC kit for less than £100 :S

What am I missing here?

Cheers

Sirius.

I read a while back even the windows xp upgrade is still a full version but checks for an older version on installation. You can even get away with borrowing a copy of a previous windows cd and when it asks you just insert the win 95/98/me cd then remove it then re insert the xp cd and will do a full install!

I just found this on the bottom of a advert for the oem version on ebuyer.

Microsoft OEM Operating system software MUST be purchased with a non-peripheral hardware component or fully assembled computer system. Non-peripheral hardware consists of a motherboard, graphics card, memory module, hard disk, keyboard or mouse. Full retail boxed products must be ordered if no hardware\PC system is to accompany the sale.

Seems you can get away with buying a mouse lol. Mad innit.
